In the past, most of the RP groups/communities I've been part of have run various contests to provide entertainment and stimulate creative processes. I've seen others use these to 'cure' writers block and do off-screen character development that they couldn't quite fit in… in one case, even show the effects of what would've happened if a decision was made differently.
So, every quarter I'm going to post up a concept in the Fan Fiction section. Everyone who participates will receive prizes, with a grand prize being awarded based on a) completion of project and/or b) best entries.
Possible concepts:
Words and Blurbs (or Doodles) – A list of words will be provided, the challenge is to use each word in a short story (four paragraphs minimum) or sketch, or use all the words in a single story. Can be IC, or IC-OOCishness/Forth-wall Aware, or Alternate History/Universe. NOTE: If you opt to draw, use http://artpad.art.com/artpad/painter/ to create your doodle. This'll put everyone on the same playing field when it comes to art (even me, I suck at drawing with a touchpad).
What If – Hypothetical situation is given to create a short story of at least six paragraphs. A good opportunity to explore 'other paths' or go into Alternate History.
Character Survey – A series of questions is given, to be answered ICly. Fourth-wall Awareness optional.
Other Worlds – We take our chars and reapply them to a Alternate Universe setting. Anything goes, as long as it fits the new world.
"How hard did you hit him?" "Quite hard, actually. For some reason he irritated me." They stared back to where the Grolim lay. "You're getting to be more like Belgarath every day," Silk told him. "You do more damage out of simple irritation than most men can do in a towering rage."
