Hello and welcome to the Roleplay Forum Discussion!

It's come up a few times in the past to provide a means for characters to roleplay with each other outside of the game. Although Tales of Vana'diel will still cater primarily to in-game roleplay, I figured it might be fun to just try and experiment with this idea a bit.

Given that forum roleplay can take place over a couple days and real time, as well as other issues having to do with it not taking place in real time, I'd like to establish some preliminary guidelines.

1. Scene setting: The first poster will take this role on. As Tales of Vana'diel itself tends to follow real-time progression, the date and time of the initial post will serve as a 'timestamp' for when this particular forum RP takes place within the timeline relative to the in-game roleplay scenes. For example, if I made a post today (today is Sunday), and we have scheduled in-game RP yesterday and tomorrow, this post and all subsequent posts would take place on the same day, between the two scheduled roleplaying days. Thus, if the forum roleplay ends up going for several days OOCly, it will still be taken as happening in the past relative to in-game roleplays that happen during the time that it is running. It is the responsibility for the roleplayers who take part in the forum roleplay to keep the timeline straight in their heads, and what constitutes past/future events.

Aside from the timeline setting, the opening poster will also serve to set the scene. Where the RP takes place, etc.
2. Who can attend?: Anyone can join in on a forum RP if it makes sense for your character to do so given setting and timeline issues.
3. Linkshells Rules and Content: All of the otherwise previously established linkshell rules still apply here. Try to keep it PG-13 as well, for reasons I don't think need explanation. ;)
4. OOC Issues: If you decide to participate in this, please try to make it a regular habit to post. You'll often have people waiting on your posts, waiting for your response. Try to do it at least once a day, though we understand tricky schedules. Try not to hound others who haven't replied (within a day) either. You can give them a gentle poke if they are taking longer than that. Generally, you must wait for someone to reply to your post before you can post again. If three days have passed with no replies, you can reply again. If a week goes by and there haven't been any new additions to the topic, the RP will be considering over and the thread should be locked.

Anyways, I'll turn it over to you all now. I hope everyone has fun with this! :)

That sounds confusing and fragmented. Having a Half-Gaiden timeline on an already sliding timeline it probably going to be about as canon as any of the DBZ movies. The only way I see this working is by people posting almost entire stories on their own, and we have a whole other topic for that. But wait, all is not lost. What if we did non-canon RP here? WHAT IF WE DID WHAT IF'S?

Well gee Kirious, I don't know what a What If is.

A "What if" asks '"what if." Someone starts a topic, creates a scenario, and we play that Scenario. What if the allied forces lost the Crystal War? What if the entire cast was gender swapped? What if we were our Abyssean counter-parts? What if we were the cast of the first Final Fantasy?

Obviously we would want major changes that would effect everyone's characters, not minors that would only heavily effect a single character's development. Something like: "What If Kirious had never been made into a Blue Mage" would heavily effect the story of at least a few characters, but would not necessarily world changing for everyone else on a dramatic level. Perhaps we'll even have a topic start and give it a week or two for basic world building where it is necessary, like, say the Crystal War one. What happened to the cities, where is everyone, what are the Beastmen up to, how are the Zilart holding up with these changes?

I like the Forum RP idea. It is good for those who cannot log in game for personal reasons, and I'm really looking forward to see them post here.

Regarding the What Ifs, I think there is already a fanfiction section for that, that can also be used to roleplay in (the last free writing contest was a good example for that, though almost no one decided to take the roleplaying route of it by replying to someone else's entries). So let's keep that for the What Ifs. Good idea, Avi.
To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." – Doug Walker

My suggestion for a solution to address some of the issues that might crop up with this is to make forum RP non-canon until completed. Start a RP thread, RP in it, then close it out once the desired events have occurred. This will then time-stamp the end of the event and the passage of time can then be fitted into the canon online RP events with any tweaks that might be necessary made in the closing posts. Also I think it goes without saying that if a conflict occurs the forum RP can be modified after the fact to fit into the in-game RP. And if an unresolvable conflict occurs game RP trumps forum.

Moved this thread into the Brainstorm section, since this clearly turned from 'introduction' to 'discussion'.

The free writing contest wasn't a forum RP. It was multiple single stories that took place with a single theme.

That's slightly better than having conversations that last a week in game simply because it took 3 days for the participants to finish it on the forum. I still don't like the idea of having something happening 'while' we RP that retroactively happens after it's been done.

Another suggestion would be to try to keep things to 1-2 RP days at most in a thread. It may also help to keep forum threads as 'past' events. We've done RPs before where we RP a different time than the current day, so this could be a continuation of that. Overall, if you join an RP, I'd just say to keep in mind that sometimes these threads can take unexpected twists. How you want to handle that, I'd say should be up to the RPers.
