I really don't think this is Olzhyria based on the furnshings that came from there… My vote, and hope, is that it would be Ulbuka… The encampment in the rivers steppe could be where one of its native tribes lives (Denali / Ogre sets, all native-like armor is described to be coming from there). Then again I expected it to be a lot more western-like than that.
To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

I can confirm that with all likelihood that building at the top of the city probably is a placeholder and not representative of what may actually occupy the top of the mountain. It's the San d'Orian Cathedral model they put up there, although it is missing the top section where the papsque would speak from.
I'm thinking that Kj's guess is pretty close – the overall city design is closer to what I'd expect of a western continent than the Mithran Motherland. The cities themselves look a little European in their design, and the "waterways" zone made me think of sewers/catacombs that I've read about under Paris. The 'jungle' makes me think of a Black/Sherwood Forest theme, and I'm seeing a lot of cliffs and what could either be moors/heatherlands, or vineyards. And that little encampment could be gypsies or natives.
"How hard did you hit him?" "Quite hard, actually. For some reason he irritated me." They stared back to where the Grolim lay. "You're getting to be more like Belgarath every day," Silk told him. "You do more damage out of simple irritation than most men can do in a towering rage."
The jungles make me wonder if they will perhaps expand this to include multiple continents and not just one.
Supposedly the announcement at Vanafest is they are planning something that lies somewhere between (in terms of overall content) the Abyssea/Add-on scenario battle content, and a full expansion. Fine by me, honestly. It would be neat though if they just expanded the world a bit and created new zones, etc, with some good battle content and some good quests. Honestly, a lot of what people complain about when it comes to Abyssea and Voidwatch is that they don't include their own zones and they are all zone rehashes. It's a shortcut that SE made to get the content out cheaply and quick… but their playerbase sees that.
A part of me really isn't clawing for new missions at this point… the game really does have quite a bit. But I would love some involved questlines… but who knows. If it leans closer to a full expansion I'd be thrilled either way lol
It wasn't necessarily just a "shortcut to be lazy," it was a shortcut to save space. On the PS2 hard drives they only had so much space to work with, and are just now getting the OK to exceed that original amount. A lot of people with the older non-40GB drives are going to have issues with not being able to update, and are going to get left in the dust.
But a lot of the old Chrono Cross team is/was working on FFXI, so that could also be a big part of the alternate dimensions thing.

Must… stop…. the brainstorming….. *screams in pain holding her head*!!!
