Korghan grew up in the Galkan slums in the Mines District in Bastok. From a young age, he was interested in Chocobos, spending most of his free time around the stables watching the birds. Soon, this interest turned into an apprenticeship in the stables, where aside from learning how to care for the animals he met all sorts of individuals who had business with the stables.

When the Crystal War broke out, Korghan was approached by a friend he had made while working in the stables, Centurion Josef Barkhorn. Knowing that it was unlikely that Korghan would be deployed to the front lines, he asked his friend to look after his daughter in his absence.

As the war dragged on, Korghan started seeing fewer and fewer faces returning from the front lines for R&R. Every night he prayed fervently to Altana to bring an end to the loss and suffering of the war. Before his prayers were realized, many children in Bastok were orphaned including his charge, Lenina.

After the war, Korghan left the stables behind him to care for those left without parents or homes. For 18 years, Korghan worked in Bastok's orphanage until the once bustling house of children was but an empty husk. Korghan tried his hand – unsuccessfully – at working in the mines before deciding to become an adventurer and see Vana'diel for himself rather than live vicariously by reading about it in books.
