––––––––––––––––––-

Background: Born in the southern continent of Olzhirya, to a family of renowned warriors. After only 2 years living in her homeland, Obtilii, her mother, father, and several relatives relocated to Mindartia after hearing tales of the sport to be had against the plentiful beastmen. The seas weren't with them on the voyage and a powerful storm led them far offtrack. They later arrived at the western shores of Quon and slowly traversed their way first from Bastok then to San d'Oria. Obtilii's parents grew to like the lush forests of Jugner and constructed a home in the foothills. The rest of the family continued the trek to Windurst. Obtilii grew up in Jugner, learning to hunt and track under the tutelage of her mother. By 12 she had herself defeated an orcish dragoon, though the victory left her with a scarred arm. Headstrong and curious of the world around her, she often left home to talk to passing trade caravans. From these wanderers she learned many tales and stories of the lands beyond which only fueled her growing wanderlust. At 15 she decided to strike it out on her own. Her parents were against it but any attempts to keep her home would have failed without doubt. Her mother gave her a knife made from a bone of the deer common to Olzhirya and her blessing, hoping that Obtilii would find somewhere to at last settle down and be at peace.

From that day Obtilii's life become harder than she had imagined. She had to hunt daily for food, preying mostly on the sheep that grazed on the hardy grasses of the forests. She got supplies from traders by bartering homemade bone jewelry. In time though, the orcs of the region began to attack the very caravans she depended on. Soon she found herself acting as a guardian in the shadows for the merchants, using guerilla tactics she devised on her own. As the years grew darker, the very people she guarded began to fear the Shadow Assassin, despite the fact her victims were only orcs. So she willingly accepted what others perceived of her and started stealing what she needed from the caravans, all the while slaying any orcs who had similar or worse intentions.

As the Beastmen Confederate began to grow, backed by the mysterious Dark Kindred to the north, Jugner Forest started becoming even too wild for her to exist safely. The orcs began building massive gates and walls, barring most pathways through the forest and to the surrounding areas. She knew her parents were far enough from the growing threat and hidden too well to be detected by the blundering orcs. But her home was whatever tree she fell asleep in, and those were growing scarcer as the orcs felled them for lumber. Sneaking her way through the hills and La Theine Plateau, she made her way to San d'Oria. To her dismay, Ronfaure was heavily damaged from orc assaults. This momentary shock and loss of direction caused her to be ambushed by a small squad of Orcish Grapplers. Her sneak tactics would be no help in open combat like this, and her chances of survival were dismal even to her. Refusing to die without putting up a fight, she drew her knife and proceeded to give the orcs a battle they weren't expecting. Her nimble parries and deft strikes left one orc after another mortally wounded or dead on the ground. But she was growing tired, and the enemy forces were still to great for her. A hail of iron bolts from behind her finished off the remaining orcs. She turned to see several Royal Knights reloading their crossbows and taking up a defensive position. She was escorted to San d'Oria soon after.

Her performance against those orcs earned her an audience with the commander of Iron Rams, Rongelouts N. Distaud. It seems many merchants had brought tales of the killer in the shadows to the city. Needing new tactics since the terrible loss in Jugner Forest some days ago (which Obtilii did not witness as it took place near the hidden route to East Ronfaure) the commander recruited Obtilii to teach her combat style to his troops. Her recruitment and eventual (and surprisingly quick) promotions were kept in the strictest secrecy as most people of San d'Oria would have distaste over a Mithra in their ranks. The tactics she taught the Iron Rams proved invaluable in many conflicts. Her success here would at last bring her to Windurst.

Now a Second Leiutenant in the Royal Army, Obtilii's masterful combat strategies again garnered important attention. This time it was from the Royal Guards. These elite warriors would later become the Order of Paladins. Once again her induction to the elite troops was done in secret. There she coupled her own natural fighting style and instincts with the discipline and white magic of the Guard training. The day she was to receive her Royal Guard uniform, a captive orc had broke free of its chains and murdered the two soldiers who were to lock it up in Watchdog Alley. Women and children screamed in terror as the mad beastman ran through Southern San d'Oria, injuring any in its way. Wielding her great sword she sprinted to the foul creature and blocked its escape through the front gates. Other knights were hot on its heels by this time and the orc was desperate enough to attack her. With murder in its eyes it lunged at her. With a single swing she cut through the orc from shoulder to waist, killing it instantly. This act made her a small celebrity in the city and her "graduation" from training was publicly announced and celebrated.

Word came to San d'Oria that Windurst had been razed in a vicious assault masterminded by the Yagudo Theomilitary's leader Tzee Xicu. As part of the Allied Forces of Altana, San d'Oria sent many many troops and craftworkers to Windurst. Knowing that the San d'Orians would need an ambassador that the Windurstians could relate to, Obtilii was assigned to coordinate the relief effort. The sight of battered Windurst brought waves of sorrow and pity to her heart. Too many children were weeping for lost loved ones and friends, too many elders were sullen and their faces darkened with fear and hopelessness. Even the seemingly enternally happy Tarutaru were brokenhearted over the wounds inflicted to their home. Seeing this set a fire roaring in her heart. Even in times of war this brand of cruelty was uncalled for. These Yagudo needed to meet justice, soon and at the edge of a sword. Personally helping rebuild houses and bridges, she heard from those around her recountings of the fury and wanton destruction the Theomilitary had metted out. Days later she was called to Heavens Tower, (Walls was flooded, small boats carried people to and from the tower, many bodies still littered the dark water) for a meeting with the Star Sibyl. It seemed that strange creatures had appeared outside of Jeuno. All three nations and the Duchy were wary of this new development, especially since a flickering comet had blazed into existence in the night skies recently. Orders had come from San d'Oria for Obtilii to investigate the strange things and bring the report back home. Accepting this new task, she set out for Windurst Waters to speak to her subordinate…

- Part 2 -

…20 years later

"Sir. This order.. I can't believe it's come to this." A San d'Orian knight looked with dismay at the scroll that she had been handed. A commanding officer placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It can't be helped. This is proof of how close we are to losing this war. We must follow ord–" The knight shrugged off the hand almost violently. "But this is wrong! Do you have any idea how many will die because of this?!" The knight, wearing the garb of the Royal Guards, stared into the eyes of her captain. "I know. We all know. But our loyalty and lives belong to San d'Oria.. If we fall, countless lives.. possibly all of Altana's children may soon follow. This isn't a choice. We must do our duty." The female knight's tail slumped at the word 'duty'. She offered a halfhearted salute to her captain. "Yes sir.." The mithra walked away, clutching the written orders in her fist. 'Our duty'? Duty? Our duty isn't to sacrifice others for victory.. It'll be a massacre. I know it. She leaned weakly against a wall once she was out of sight of her captain and fellow soldiers. They'll all die. Everyone.. The woman gasped softly, her eyes widening as another implication struck her. Everyone… even.. The thought made her shudder. …Altana… my love.. I pray you two can ever forgive us. The mithra, famed Royal Guard Obtili Usenah, collapsed to the ground and began to sob quietly.

Obtili awoke with a start, tears still streaming heavily from her amber eyes. The disorientation she felt from her dream caused her to look around her mog house in confusion. She placed her hand on her forehead. "Again.." Golden sunlight streamed in through the window shutters while birds could be heard warbling happily. The mithra got out of bed and dressed before washing up. "Gods.. it never stops." Her gaze fell on a golden coffer that sat on the floor, a San d'Orian flag hanging above it. The coffer had a fine layer of dust and an elaborate lock. Obtili shook her head, trying to banish the lingering memories of her nightmare. "Perhaps it's penance.. To relive my sin for the rest of my life." She sighed. "Training will help me forget." She went to her armoire and removed her kyudogi and bow.

Another crow fell to the dirt with an arrow in it. "That makes thirty." Obtili sprinted through the high grass of Sarutabaruta, scanning the horizon for more flying prey. Instead her eyes found a goblin corpse in the distance, smoke wafting from its seemingly flash-burned armor. The ranger's eyes lit up, Another one! She stooped down to examine the body. Maybe those gobs were telling the truth after all.. Perhaps a trip to the ruins is in order. Her ears twitched at a distant sound. She turned to look at the source and her keen eyes spotted a small group of adventurers tramping along toward Odin's Gate. One seemed to have a more orderly gait than the others. Obtili's eyes grew stern. That's a paladin or I'm a blind ahriman. This warrants a welcome, I'd say. With that, she ran back towards town, eager to see what fate had in store for her today.

After reading Kaolla and Avina's extended character information, I decided to follow suit and add in the changes and "tweaks" to Obi's personality overtime. Also included will be truer retellings of Obi's earlier years. After all, it is fairly safe to assume that some portions of her past (particularly her military performance) may have been embellished as a means to boost morale among the troops she led during the Crystal War. (Oh and please bear with me if this gets a tad long ^^; when I get inspired, boy do I get inspired lol)

Personality traits –

As a former general, Obtili has a fair amount of arrogance. This has developed over the years since the war as the numbers of "adventurers" flourished, as she viewed these upstart "heroes" as inexperienced and more a threat than a resource. Her reasons for this opinion stem from a sharp dislike of the mercenary warrior trade. This of course led her into many disputes with Windurst's mithran generals at times. Though she could not deny the effectiveness of the mithran troops and still holds the belief that only mithra can bring any sense of honor to being a mercenary or adventurer. That belief has eroded overtime, especially after joining her new companions, though she still views them as children playing at being heroes and reminds them of this often and with much gusto.

Her pride however is tempered with a very strong sense of camaraderie, even bordering on an overly protective sister or mother instinct with her newfound allies. This is further strengthened by the fact that she was ordered by her superiors to ensure the safety of the group, based on direct orders from the Star Sibyl who foresaw many great deeds in their collective futures. This protective trait often leads her to feel wronged or wounded when others in the group don't approach her for advice or fail to consult her opinion on major decisions. She'd never admit it, but she longs to feel more like a trusted friend to the others rather than a glorified babysitter.

Not much is spoken of Obitili's past relationships, but it is correct to assume she is not innocent. She is very vocal on the subject of who she finds attractive, and enjoys ruffling feathers among her allies. On that particular note, Obtili is decidedly bisexual in her preference. She is by no means shy about flirting, in fact she enjoys "the hunt". She doesn't view any of the group as potential lovers because of the age difference between her and them, but has no problem teasing them and using her still powerful feminine wiles to get her way.

Despite her rigid military training and adherence to laws, Obtili is a noted "party animal" and enjoys any and all festivals to her fullest ability. Known to frequent taverns (the Lion's Spring Inn is still her favourite). She is unashamed of her fondness for liquor and if anyone were to ask her, she could detail many favored drink recipes and the storied histories of many of the nations' most well known intoxicants.

A major influence on Obtili's outward expressions comes from a secret guilt she has carried for 20 years. As a Royal Guard, Obtili was one of many soldiers burdened with the task of carrying false troop orders specifically meant to be intercepted by the orc army. She and two other soldiers (one of which died in the process of "delivering" the orders), were able to be successfully captured by the orcs. These orders were of course false details meant to fool the orcish army into swelling their numbers at Tavnazia. The results of that campaign, and the fates of the brutally outnumbered defenders, are a matter of historical record as is the fate of San d'Oria's former sister-nation. Beyond the guilt of knowing she had a hand in dooming countless innocent lives, she has endured the fact that her former lover was stationed in the illfated city, She has never spoken to anyone about this and it is doubtful she ever will, barring further developments. This secret shame has given her an icy demeanor and results in her taking a while to warm up to others, making her seem distant and even standoffish.

-The changes-

After travelling with her new companions and exploring the other nations after 20 years of being a near-hermit, Obtili had started to grow warmer toward the group. She had yet to show any vulnerable traits, this being an intentional defence to protect herself. She even opened up enough to offer her mentorship to Daltan. To her dismay, he seems to have developed a distaste for the Order and seems to have temporarily abandoned that path. She then buried herself in her ranger training, becoming skilled enough to "graduate" from her then-signature kyudogi. This was to keep her mind off her regrets and disappointments. When the magicite ordeal took place, her faith in her companions was shaken when they flat out ignored her misgivings about the Archduke's mission for them. The resulting aftermath chased her off to Kazham where she underwent some much-needed soulsearching.

Returning from her solo travels, Obtili rejoined the group on that fateful trip to Xarcabard. Seemingly much more lively and excitable, she made quite the impression on her allies one could assume. Along with her somewhat improved social skills, she seems to have become much more taciturn and harsh in the realm of combat, barking out orders and giving stern suggestions on tactics. She has also somehow acquired the ability to "sense" dark intentions and feelings from others. These feelings are fleeting and still unreliable, more an advanced form of intuition than anything precognitive or psychic. More often than not, these feelings manifest merely as a vague unease.

She has taken on a sisterly competition of sorts with Avina for the affections of Kenjii. Her motives for this are as of yet unknown, but it seems she more enjoys the reactions from Avina rather than seriously pursuing the young samurai. And she has seemingly grown much more affectionate toward the group, though she often shifts back to her "respect me or die" persona at times.
