She was standing there, her friends standing in front of her, staring at her.
“Why Sae?” Her eyes wandered from Avina, to Kaolla, to Nodem and Aurou.
“Why?” Her heart broke again.
“Everyone…I’m so sorry! I never meant to hurt you like this!” She glanced at each person in front of her, her best friends…and saw nothing in their eyes but coldness.
“Just go, Saerun…you obviously don’t care about anyone but yourself, anyways…” She didn’t know who had said that. She didn’t have time to think about it either as a quicksand of dark magic appeared below her feet and she panicked. She looked up at her friends, but there was no help to be had there. She was sucked into the vortex and blacked out.
When she next came to awareness, she was in water, sinking. Her eyes fluttered open. There was complete darkness around her, or maybe the water itself was black. A pinpoint of light was far above her. She struggled to lift her arm to touch it. The pressure was great against her arm, trying to force it back to her side.
I want…the light! Don’t give up!
Her arm was shaking from the effort. She was close, so close to the light. Maybe she could escape!
Escape to what?
An overwhelming wave of despair crashed through her and she lost all strength to fight. Her arm fell limply at her side.
What’s the point?
The pinpoint of light blinked, then flickered out of existence.
My fault…it was all my fault…I could have stayed…I could have dealt with the pain there…I could have saved her…I tried-…I tried! I just wasn’t…
You weren’t strong enough.
She started at the sound of the voice. She stopped sinking. Someone was holding her up.
Who…?
If you had been stronger, you could have stopped your mother from being attacked.
Who are you?!
You are a mage. I can help you find magic that will give you all the power that you need.
I don’t want dark magic!
You don’t need it. This is stronger than dark magic, because it is neutral.
. . .?
I have piqued your interest.
Mages are weak in body…I want physical and magical strength.
This is a mage fighter. You will make yourself as strong as you wish to be. You will create yourself from scratch. You will be strong.
. . . how? Please…I need…
You need a way to deal with your pain.
. . . ! How did you-
In this place, your innermost pains, desires, dreams are laid out for any to see. Your dreams were calling for help, and I have answered.
Who are you?
I am the one who can help you. I can help you attain the power that you seek. The power to defend your friends. The power to protect yourself.
How?
You will find me. As I have found you, you shall find me.
I don’t suppose you’d tell me where to start?
Heh. You’ll find me where the white gate meets the sea.
All of a sudden, she plummeted. She broke through the water and was falling through air.
She shot out of bed, gasping for breath, covered in sweat.
“Kupopo? Are you ok, Master?” She glanced over at her moogle who floated over to her. She was peering at her in concern.
II: Jeuno Day One. =-=-=-=-=-=-= Saerun wandered around Lower Jeuno, her hands behind her head. The streets were busy and bustling, with vendors shouting and trying to advertise their goods. Adventurers were leaning in on the Auction House counters, screaming at the poor, frazzled looking Auction House Attendants.
She walked forward, trying to get out of the stairway to Upper Jeuno, and got nearly rammed by a large Galkan warrior. It was only her evasiveness on Dancer that saved her from an unpleasant meeting with the guide stone.
"Watch it!" She yelled after the Galka and got a faint, "Screw you!" for her efforts. She shook her head.
I need a shield to get through all of these people unharmed…
She managed to get to Chamber of Commerce, where there weren't nearly so many people. She clutched her bag closely to her chest and sighed in relief. She set her bag down on a counter and started to rummage through it.
"Okay…what do I need? Daggers, check. Armor…" She glanced down at herself, and was happy to note that she had not suddenly gone naked. "…check. Linkpearl…" She pulled the blue pearl out of her pocket and smiled painfully. It brought up so many both happy and painful memories
for her. "…check. What am I missing…? She tapped her chin thoughtfully. She was missing something…something very important.
A male hume dressed in dark red and black heavy armor, who was standing next to her looked over. His armor reminded her of something…something she had seen not too long ago. But what?
"How about food?" Sae glanced at him and then slapped her own forehead.
"Of course! How could I forget!" The hume chuckled softly.
"Planning to go on a trip?" She nodded to him.
"Yes, I am. Off to find something really. The hume looked up from the paperwork he appeared to be doing and locked eyes with her. Something was piercing in his blue eyes, and it seemed to peer through her soul.
"What are you trying to find?" She found herself incapable of looking away from him. She was feeling more and more uncomfortable around the hume. But city living 101 kicked in: Never appear weak. She leaned back against the counter nonchalantly, but her heart was pounding. What was going on?
"Where the white gate meets the sea…" She quoted to him. The hume looked away, pondering, breaking their eye contact. She sighed silently in relief. Something about him was too…intense.
"Are you perhaps a seer? That sounds like something straight from a vision." She laughed to herself and shook her head.
"Oh no…It was just a dream! But I have nothing better to do, so why not see if such a place exists?"
The hume smiled at her.
"Most seers start with dreams you know. But let me give you a tip…from the way that you said that…I don't think that this white gate is an item, but a place," He leaned in, his face close to hers and their eyes locked, once again knocking her breath from her.
"I…uh…thanks…" He chuckled slightly and leaned back.
"Don't mention it. Plus…aren't there people around here who are good at finding…unusual…places? Why don't you look around?" The hume turned and walked out.
What the hell was that about…? Sae stood staring in shock for a moment before shaking her head.
"That was odd…" She slung her bag over her shoulder. "So what did I need again…?" She sighed. "Right…food." She pushed the door open and forced herself into the crowd of people swarming the streets. She got in line for the Auction House. She ended up waiting for a good ten minutes before the Attendents got to her.
"Hi there, I'll take a stack of Yellow Curry Buns, for 15,000." The Attendent shuffled somethings around before shaking his head.
"I'm sorry…you can't purchase a stack of those for 15,000." She sighed and stared at her gilpurse.
"Alright…how about 17,000?" She questioned. The Attendent nodded, and she handed the corresponding gil over.
"What else can I get you?" He asked.
What kinds of food can I make that are cheap and won't go bad? Well let's see…depending on where I go, I could probably pick up ingredients from monsters…goblins drop onions, funguar drop different types of mushrooms, dhalmel meat from dhalmels…So maybe just some basic ingredients like water…and some crystals…
"I'll take three stacks of fire crystals for 2,000 each. Also one water tank for 3,000.
That's it, thanks" The Attendent shuffled a few more papers before handing her the three bundled stacks of fire crystals and the water tank. She placed everything into her bag before waving goodbye to the attendent and walking off.
"Alright so, I've got all of my bases covered. Now for what that guy said…Who would be good at finding unusual places around here?" As she was looking around for any clues, she heard a familiar Tarutaru yelling.
"Come one, come all! Let Kurou-Morou tell your fortune-wortune!" Sae shook her head in amusement and headed up the stairs to Kurou-Morou.
"Hey Kurou-Morou! Wanna tell me my fortune?" Kurou-Morou looked up and grinned happily.
What the heck…maybe I'll have some good luck! I could use it right now…
"Certainly-wertainly, Saerun! I have your crystal ball around here, somewhere!" He ducked behind his counter, while she was left in her thoughts of what it had taken in order for her to fetch the materials to make that crystal ball. She had been…extremely bored that day.
While she had been thinking, Kurou-Morou had found her crystal ball and was peering into it.
All of a sudden, he slammed his hands down, and quickly pulled the crystal ball off the table with a sheepish grin.
"Heh…heh…maybe you should come back and ask again tomorrow-worrow!" She glanced at him curiously.
"What? Did you crack my crystal ball or something? I worked hard to make that you know!"
Kurou-Morou instantly looked affronted.
"Absolutely-wutely not! I would never damage a client's crystal!" She leaned her arms on the counter and stared at him.
"Well then! Just tell me my fortune!" She was starting to grow a big aggrivated. Kurou-Morou sighed and then nodded.
"Very well then…General Signs: Poor. Financial Signs: Poor. Romantic Signs: Poor. Take special care when throwing things away lest you toss out a key item." She stared in shock.
Really? Is my luck really that bad?!
"I'm so sorry…you've been having a really bad day, haven't you?" She stood up straight and groaned, running a hand through her hair.
"You're telling me…so unless you know of anyone who is good at finding places around here, my day is just going to continue on like it is…" She grumbled. Kurou-Morou looked thoughtful for a moment and then pointed down the stairs.
"How about down there? I've heard people muttering about some Aht Urgan… or White Gate or whatever when entering there-where." Her eyes lit up and she nodded.
"Thanks Kurou-Morou! That makes up for your crappy fortune!" She quickly ran down the stairs.
Behind her Kurou-Morou threw a minor fit, shaking his arms in anger.
"It's *not* a crappy-wappy fortune! Just…not…happy!" At the same time, Chululu, the tarutaru love of his life, passed by and rolled her eyes.
"Oh please! Your fortunes *are* crappy…compared to mine!" She burst out laughing and continued walking by. Kurou-Morou's heart sank and his head banged on the counter.

Meanwhile, Sae looked around and saw the door to Neptune's Spire.
Of course! They *would* probably know about the eastern lands! Maybe this White Gate is there!
She walked into Neptune's Spire and into the door at the end of the hall. She followed the long hallway down the stairs through another door. As she entered the last door, she stopped and looked around, placing a carefully crafted emotionless face on. These were people who could sense and see weakness and would rip you apart for it.
Her eyes scanned the room, and just as she was unable to look away from the male hume earlier, her eyes kept being drawn back to the blonde elvaan male standing at a table in the center of the room. She walked to him.
"I want to get to Whitegate. Can you help me?" The blonde elvaan looked shocked for a moment before staring at Sae. Their eyes met and it became a battle of mental wills. The other elvaan was trying to stare her down and scare her. She didn't let him, she wouldn't let him. She had to find this place if it was the last thing that she died. People grew quiet around them, as they watched the interaction.
The staring match lasted for what could have been hours, but was probably just seconds.
Eventually the elvaan burst out laughing.
"Alright, lassie…I can help ye'…but at a price!" Sae folded her arms over her chest and simply raised an eyebrow.
"Name it." He smirked.
"Bring me a coffer key from a beastman stronghold, and I'll get ye' a permit to travel to the Empire." Her eyes widened in surprise. That was it? In fact, she was pretty sure that she had a coffer key in her bag.
"One moment…" She stepped back out into the hallway and rummaged around in her bag.
"Aha!" She lifted up a key, which had "QS Caves" engraved on the side of it. She walked back into the room and handed the elvaan the key.
"Here you go." It was his turn to look surprise, and then he laughed.
"Alri', Lassie. Come back and see me tomorro' and I'll have ye' permit ready." He turned away
from her, pocketing the key. She quickly walked out of the room.
Tomorrow…tomorrow I'll be heading to this Whitegate…And I can find out whether it was really a dream or not…

III. Day Two: Aht Urgan
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
For the first time in nearly as long as she could remember, Saerun was up early. She was also excited, for the first time in a long time. She had had another dream last night. It was similar to the one the night before. She was sinking in the dark water. However, the pressure against her wasn't as great, and the pinpoint of light seemed even brighter than the night before.
"You look happier, kupo! Sleep well?" She looked over at MogMog and smiled.
"Good morning, MogMog! And I do feel a bit better, how did you sleep?" MogMog floated over to to Sae in her bed and then sat on the foot of her bed.
"Good, kupopo! Where are we going today?!" Sae climbed out of bed and threw on her armor. As she was sliding her gloves on, she glanced at MogMog, who was bouncing excitedly on her bed now.
"Careful, there…please don't break my bed…" MogMog stopped bouncing and sulked, her magenta pink pompom falling in front of her face. Sae shook her head in amusement.
"And we're going travelling to a new place!" Immediately, MogMog started bouncing on the bed again.
"We're going to Whitegate! And stop bouncing on my bed!" MogMog stopped bouncing and stared at Sae.
"White…gate? That's a *place* that you screamed out in your sleep? I thought it was some odd guy's name…" MogMog looked thoughtful, while Sae blushed furiously. "Speaking of which…whatever happened to your knight? He hasn't been here in a really long time…" She looked down and sighed.
"I don't know…so…I left him a letter saying goodbye…in a romantic sense. I think I'm done dating for now…it just ended up hurting too much in the end." MogMog's pompom drooped depressed.
"Kuuupoooo…..I'm sorry, Master! I didn't mean to make you sad!" Sae simply smiled, as she always did.
"Don't worry MogMog…just remember! We're about to head to Whitegate! If there's a moghouse there, you can meet me there, right?" MogMog started bouncing yet again, then stopped.
"Yes, yes, kuppooo! MogMog will meet you there!" Sae nodded and then walked out of the moghouse. MogMog cheered and then resumed her bouncing on the bed. Sae popped her head back in suddenly.
"And stop bouncing on my bed!" She quickly walked back out again. MogMog's pompom fell and she sulked.
"Awww…."

Saerun strode confidently into Neptune's Spire. She strode up to the Elvaan she had spoke to the day before.
"Excuse me…" She said, in a polite, though no-nonsense way. She had done what he had asked of her, and she wasn't going to take no for an answer now. The elvaan turned to her and smirked.
"Hello there lassie. I see ye've come for ye' permit?" Sae simply nodded. The elvaan chuckled and then held out a piece of paper to her. She took it and looked it over. It read "Boarding Pass to AUW" with a signature at the bottom.
"It's all ready for ye'. Ye'd best be headin' to Mhaura, ye' hear?" As the elvaan turned away, Sae nodded.
"Thank you." She quickly made her way out of Neptune's Spire and then sighed and pulled out the pass again.
"Aht Urgan Whitegate…" She whispered, staring up at the bright blue sky. "Here I come…"

It had taken several hours, but she had made it. She had had to go to Port Jeuno, get a chocobo, travel through Sauromugue Champaign, then through Meriphataud Mountains, cut across a part of Tahrongi Canyon, and then she finally arrived at Buburimu Peninsula. In fact at this point, the sun was just starting to set and Sae sighed softly.
She rolled her shoulders and stretched. She was feeling extremely stiff after spending most of the day on a chocobo. It wouldn't have taken nearly so long, had it not been so hot in the mountain range. She had needed to stop several times and feed her chocobo some water and gysahl greens.
But she was finally in Buburimu Peninsula, almost halfway across the area, when her chocobo reeled back and knocked her off. Sae landed on her back with a loud 'Thump!'. The chocobo then ran off into the distance and she groaned as she picked herself up off the ground.
"Altana…why'd it have to kick me back so far…?" She walked as quickly as she could towards the sign, that read Mhaura. She staggered into Mhaura, the fatigue starting to set in. She glanced around, seeing the buildings tower high above her. She walked over to the port and simply handed Felisa, the gate guard 100 gil when she was asked to. She pulled out a flask of water and drank it, trying to wake herself up.
Once I'm on the ship, I'm sure I'll be too excited to go to sleep…
Once she snapped out her thoughts, she found herself on the dock, in front of Dieh Yamilsiah.
"Ship to Al Zhabi will be arriving in 5 minutes!" She called out.
Al Zhabi…? I thought that this was to Whitegate? Sae pulled out her permit and looked at it quizically. Dieh Yamilsiah glanced over her shoulder at the permit and nodded.
"Yep, that's it! 5 minutes!" Sae was too tired to really question this, so she didn't. She simply sat down and started fidling with her linkpearl. She considered talking into it for a moment, before sighing and putting it away. It wouldn't do her any good.
She already missed everyone enough. So why did she continue to torture herself by considering these things? If she had to, she could just write them…
But it wasn't the same. It wasn't the same as hearing their voices, knowing that they were doing ok. Avina, Aurou, Nodem, Kaolla, Helyos…they had been there for her, and she felt a kind of connection to them. She so wanted to talk to them…maybe just once?
Sae lifted the pearl up and took a deep breath to say something, when Dieh Yamilsiah yelled out:
"Thank you for waiting! The ferry has arrived! Please go ahead and boarrrd!" She jumped in surprise, and fumbled with the linkpearl, trying not to drop it into the ocean. Finally, she stabalized herself and tucked her pearl into her bag. When she looked up, she saw a huge, elaborate ferry in front of her. Her eyes widened, as she rose to her feet in shock.
"Woah…" She shook her head and quickly ran on board. As she thought, her adrenaline kicked up a notch, and she was definitely *not* tired anymore.
All of a sudden, the ship started moving and she nearly lost her balance. She opened the door into a small stairwell area. She glanced around and then quickly made her way up the stairs. She opened the door, that she assumed lead to the outside. As she did, the scent of ocean water assaulted her mouth and nose, and she took a deep breath in, her eyes closed to enjoy the sensation of wind against her face. As she opened her eyes, her hands lept automatically to her daggers and pulled them out.
"A kraken!" There was a kraken on the ship! She lept forward and quickly disposed of the kraken. She let out a sigh of relief as it fell back into the ocean.
She walked over to the side of the ship, and leaned on the railing. The gentle rocking sensation of the boat, combined with the sound of the water crashing and the bitter salty air provided her with a soothing balm for her soul. For the first time in weeks, she felt…at peace.
Oh mother…why did this have to happen? Why couldn't you have- She cut herself off from her mental ranting, but she still knew in the back of her head she had been about to consciously think. Why couldn't you have stayed with me forever..?
It was after two hours later, and after several attempts by strange ocean creatures to hijack the ship that the ship finally docked.
"We are now docking in Al Zahbi!"
Once the ship stopped, Saerun stepped off the ship and onto solid land, nearly stumbling as she did so. She glanced up at the new area and blinked in surprise.

IV. Day Three: Power
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Saerun was sinking in the water again. Really, this was starting to get old. She was depressed, she knew it, why did her dreams have to keep reminding her of this?
She was tired of sinking…tired of the blackness. Tired of the pain in her heart. She wanted to move on, stop being so sad. She had been doing well the last few days hadn't she? While her sadness and depression were still with her, they didn't seem quite so much of a burden. Until now…
What do I have to do to get out of this? What do I have to do to make this END, already?!
You need to find me.
She felt arms wrap around her, and pull her close. She felt the warmth radiating off of the body holding her close, and she clung to…him?, trying to get closer to the first source of warmth she had felt in a long time. His voice was soothing, and put her mind and heart at ease.
You're so close, young one…I can sense that you're here in Aht Urgan…so close…
What is your name…? Where can I find you? She felt the other shake, as if laughing. How can he laugh underwater?
Young one…this is only an ocean to you…not to me. And you may call me Feliz…
Her eyes looked around, seeking the eyes of the one holding her…Feliz. However, everything was still dark and she couldn't see a thing.
And to find you…?
Trust your eyes and your mind…We all have our masks that we wear. I'm sure you'll be able to see through mine…
Suddenly, the water and Feliz, were gone.
She was standing in a forest, a man laying at her feet, struggling to get up. She had a veil across her face, and was dressed in strange garments that she couldn't recognize. A dark smirk grew across her face, as she noticed his struggling.
She placed a boot on his head and shoved it back into the ground, just as he was about to sit up.
"Ah, ah…I see you survived that last attack…too bad, isn't it? You must be in soooo much pain," She whispered in dark amusement. She lifted a gun that was not her own, and pointed it at him. She chuckled softly to herself.
"Time to die."
Bang.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Everything in Whitegate was gray. Gray stones, gray streets, gray walkways. It was quite the contrast to the name WHITEgate…but despite her disagreement with the color scheme of the city vs it's name, there were a lot of people around.
There were also many people in types of armor that she had never seen before. There were people in red and blac, and even had hume-oid machines following them. But the most intriguiging (at least to her) were the people dressed in the odd blue and white uniforms that she had seen on Falgor's mannequin back in San d'Oria.
This place was so confusing! There were stairs and archways galore. The area seemed to be divided into quadrants. It was difficult to wander the area without getting lost, as each quadrant looked exactly like the next. She had found this out the hard way last night when she was looking for the residential area. She had wandered around Whitegate for over an hour before she had found a map merchant. She had gratefully bought a map of the area. At this point, it was nearly 2am, and she had happily crashed in her rent-a-room, only barely making it to her bed before passing out.
But now she was energized and ready to explore…and possibly find this "Feliz" that she had dreamed about.
"Close, so very close…" She murmured, quote the voice in her dream. What had he meant by trust her eyes? Did he know what had been going on with her lately? Ever since her first dream of the water, she found her eyes lingering on the people who could help her. The biggest example had been how she had focused on the elvaan who could get her the permit. There was no way for her to know who could help her, but she had been drawn to him and amazingly, she had spoken to the right person.
The same thing happened with the map merchant. She had no idea who the mithra was, until the mithra asked her if she wanted a map.
What the hell was going on?
The sound of something…different, caught her attention. She turned and her eyes were drawn to an old man speaking into a linkpearl in what sounded like a different language. The language sounded familiar to something she had heard before, but what was it?
It took a minute of listening to the old man talk before it hit her. It sounded remarkably like the language that Nodem had spoken the night that…her mother passed. She had been so shocked and stunned that she had barely registered what he was saying. She probably wouldn't have registered it at all if she hadn't realized it was another language.
Trust your eyes and your mind…
She slowly made her way over to the old hume male and he looked up at her before saying something into the pearl and putting it away.
"Can I help ye' missy?" Sae nodded and asked softly,
"May I ask you, what language were you speaking just then? It sounded very interesting and was like nothing I've ever heard…" The old man looked surprised for a moment before bursting out in a hearty burst of laughter.
"Ahh…so yur interested in the language of the far east, eh? Yur a Westerner, ain't ye'?" Sae simply nodded. "And what are ye' doing here in the east, little miss traveler? Here, sit and tell me yur story and maybe I'll teach ye' a few words, eh?" Sae sat down next to the man on the bench that he was sitting on and began to explain.
"A few months ago, my mother was attacked and poisoned by some monster. It was right after I visited her one time…she said that she was going to head out to gather some herbs for her remedies and I came out with her for a little bit…I took care of the few monsters that had tried to attack before, but she shooed me off and said that she was nearly finished and would be heading back to town shortly after.
"Eventually she died from the poison in her system that the healers could treat. I…uh…heard that if I came here, I could attain power. So I've been looking for someone who promised to meet me here. Perhaps you're him?" She glanced at the man, and the man burst out laughing.
"Me, little missy? What faith ye' have in an old man like me…" Sae stared at him, a frown appearing on her lips. Something was *off* about his appearance. There was a flicker, almost like…some kind of illusion.
"But you're not old are you? Or at least, not as old as you would like me to believe. We all have our masks that we wear…" She didn't know where these words were coming from. Maybe it was her magic finally returning to her? The man looked amused.
"Perhaps, missy…perhaps. I'm sorry to hear about yur muther. So what job are ye' then? I sense magic about ye', but ye' certainly don't *look* like one…" His eyes wandered up and down her form appreciatively. She waited patiently for his eyes to meet hers again, used to wandering eyes.
"I'm a dancer." The old man nodded and finally met her eyes again.
"So I see…" She rolled her eyes and the man chuckled again.
"Sorry about tha' missy. I so rarely get to talk with such fine young women…So ye' say that yur here fer power, eh? Yeh…methinks I can help ye' with that…How about ye' meet me in Aydeewa Subterrane t'nigh?" Sae nodded in agreement.
"Alrigh' then! I promised to teach ye' some of a new language, didn't I? Listen and repeat after me, 'Konnichiwa'…"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
He spent the next hour teaching her some basic words and phrases. He was a hard teacher, he wouldn't let her continue on until she could say the word or phrase perfectly several times in a row. But as a result, she could now say that she knew a few of the basic words and phrases.
She had asked him earlier what the word for brother was, thinking back to when Nodem had hugged her and called her "little sister". It had been the brightest point she had experienced in a good week. Her family may have died, but at least she still had someone she could consider almost-family.
"Brother, eh? Older or younger brother?"
"Older." Speaking of which, just how old *was* he? He looked to be a few years older than her, but sometimes appearances could be decieving.
"Either Niisan or Oniisan. Say them both for me." She repeated both of them several times until she got the accents right and he nodded.
Now though, she was wandering through Whitegate, watching everything happen around her in fascination.
I should probably find out how to access this Aydeewah Subterrane…
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
At sundown, Sae found herself in Al Zhabi, by a chocobo renter, and she hopped onto a chocobo and headed in Wajaom Woodlands. This place was a direct contrast to Aht Urgan's dreadfully dull colors. It was a lush area, filled with lots of plants. And monsters, which made her thankful to be on a chocobo.
She traveled through Wajaom into Bhaflau Thickets, using a map she had picked up earlier from the same map vendor she had stumbled across the night before. The map vendor had pointed to a place on the map of Bhaflau Thickets when she had told her that she needed to find her way to Aydeewah.
"And according to the map…it should…be…here…ish?" Sae hopped off the chocobo and saw a small cave and walked into it.
"Here we go…"
Now to find out what this has all been about…
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Aydeewah Subterrane was beautiful. That was the only word that she had for it. Absolutely beautiful. It was green and mossy, but quiet in a very peaceful way. She stood for a moment, and closed her eyes, enjoying the peace. Her eyes then snapped open and she began running. She had the sensation that she was working against time. The closer that she got, the more and more the sensation increased. The sensation was exhilarating and kept her from getting tired.
A few spectral jigs later found her running down a steep ramp and then into a place that made her eyes widen in shock.
There was a large pool of water in the center of the clearing, remnants of what appeared to be pillars scattered across the area. Small lights were floating in the air, creating a mystical feel to the area. She slowly walked into the water, it was shallow and the water only went up to her ankles.
"You made it. You followed my call perfectly." Arms wrapped around her from behind gently and she jumped in surprise. The embrace felt familiar to her. Without turning, she whispered softly.
"Feliz…" He let her go and she turned around and found herself staring into the piercing blue eyes of a hume several years older than herself. He was wearing the same uniform that she had seen in Falgor's room.
"Sae~run." He said back, pronouncing her name with a slightly different emphasis that she took to be entirely eastern.
"Your call?" She murmured. He nodded then reached out and touched her hair gently.
"You're suffering from a split mind, and wounds of the heart. Such pain called out to me and I followed your call. Hence I called you here…to help you. You wanted power, and I believe it can help you. You can regain purpose again…I can help you Sae~run. I'm offering you power the likes of which you've never seen or experienced."
Her eyes widened at his explanation.
"A split mind?" She questioned him. He appeared to be smiling at her, but it was hard to tell behind the veil.
"Dual personalities…And don't try to switch now. The natural magic here prevents mental manipulation. You…" He stroked her cheek gently, and she quickly stepped back. "Are born of light…your other, darkness. Ask her later, hm? What do you say, Sae~run?" He took a step back from her and held out his hand.
"Take my hand and accept the power of the Blue Mage. But know now that you can never turn back from this point if you choose this power. Be certain now and make your decision."
Her head was racing. Her heart was pounding. Here's the chance that she was looking for. The end of her dreams. The power that she sought. But the path was permanent. Did it matter? She wasn't just going to give up protecting her friends.
She reached out and took his gloved hand.
"You are certain this is what you want? There is no turning back." Saerun nodded.
"I'm certain."
"Very well. Prepare yourself."
Her world exploded in pain and she blacked out.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Slowly, she came back to awareness. Her body was aching, her head was pounding. She slowly pushed herself up to her knees.
"You're awake." She looked up to see Feliz in front of her. "Good. Congratulations, Sae~run. Welcome to the ranks of the Blue Mages. Right now, you are but an empty vessel, a base creature, weaker than the weakest mortal. You must wrest your strength and power from your enemies. This is the only guidance that I can give you. You wanted power and were willing to sacrifice your life for it. Now show me this thirst with your actions. Take care, Sae~run." Feliz then vanished and she pulled herself up to her feet.
Weaker than the weakest mortal…now what am I supposed to do?

V. Day Four: The Other Me
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae staggered into her moghouse after a long day of getting beaten up by monsters. It had takena while, but she had figured out what to do. Anytime a monster was about to use a special move, she had to focus her magic and then watch attentively. If she was sucessful, she'd feel her magic shift, and would feel the spell bind itself to her. Feliz hadn't been kidding when he said taht she'd create herself and wrest her strength from her enemies. Each spell, each monster's soul that she bound to her own increased her power significantly. But hell if getting beaten up didn't get extremely tiring after a while.
"Master, master, kupo! Are you alright?!" She barely heard MogMog, she was so exhausted. And she *still* had something to take care of too before she could go to sleep.
"Can you…cure me please?" She felt the powerful moogle magic wash over her and cure her wounds. "Thanks MogMog, go to sleep ok?" MogMog actually looked hesitant, but then nodded.
"Okay…kupoo…" the little moogle summoned her own bed and fell asleep instantly. Sae put her sword down in the corner, put on some nightclothes and laid down on her bed. Before she could go to sleep though, she had something to take care of first. What Feliz said to her was weighing heavily on her.
"I think we need to talk…other me," She felt more than a bid ridiculous talking out loud to herself. There was silence for a bit. She wasn't sure what she had expected, but nothing happened. She sighed and was just about to discount Feliz as completely crazy when something did happen.
(*You don't need to speak out loud, Sae*) Sae heard the voice in her head. The voice was definitely female, but the tone and inflection were completely different from her own. Sae gasped in surprise.
(Who? How?) The other sighed and Sae got the feeling that she was both amused and annoyed at the same time.
(*I'm going to pull you back so we can speak face to face. Brace yourself.*) She blinked in surprise.
"Brace myself? How?" Her eyes closed and then she had the distinct sensation of falling backwards. The sensation stopped and she felt someone holding her up.
"Open your eyes, Sae…" Sae opened her eyes and saw herself looking at someone who was nearly her twin. Her twin had longer hair that was pulled back into a braid, but had the same green eyes as her, but there was something in them. A certain darkness that dulled her eyes. She had seen that look before, generally in the people who had seen too much in their lives.
Sae stumbled and realized that she had been standing on a step and her twin let go of her. She glanced around the room. The room was well lit with a natural light although there were no windows for light to come in from. The walls were a light green, splattered with what looked like white paint. It made it look like the sky…if skies were green of course. There were a lot of framed photos on the walls.
Her eyes were drawn to the white couches in the middle of the room. She slowly walked over to them and ran her hand over them. They were made of smooth leather, a type of leather purified by anima. Her twin simply stood in place and watched Sae walk around quietly. Sae turned around to face her twin, and then saw what was behind her. A large pedestal in front of a screen.
"What is that?" Sae walked over to it. There was a step up to the pedestal, and the pedestal was surrounded by a railing. She was about to step up onto the step, when her twin pulled her back.
"Stop that…If you want to talk, don't go up there. You'll return to consciousness and it'll be harder to talk." Sae glanced between the screen and her twin.
"So what is it?" Her twin pulled her back towards the couches. Sae quickly realized that her twin was much stronger than herself. Sae sat down on the couch and found it to be extremely comfortable. Her twin sat down on the bed, looking very uncomfortable.
"That's the screen of consciousness. You're the one who's normally in control…so you're the one who sits up there. It's why you've never seen the inside of our mindscape," Her twin said, nearly monotonous. Sae simply shook her head.
"Ok…back up. Control, mindscape, what?" Her twin sighed and ruffled her hair up slightly, looking a bit stressed.
"Ok, ok…I'm not doing a good job explaining this…" Sae placed a hand on her shoulder, and her twin stiffened at the touch.
"How about you start with who you are?" Her twin nodded.
"My name is Sobe, and I am…for lack of a better term, an aspect of you." Sae took a deep breath, trying to control her extreme confusion.
"Explain that please…Sobe," Sobe nodded.
"Alright…You know how you don't remember what happened after our first failed mission in Windurst and the four months following that?" Sae nodded. "That's because something…very traumatic happened to us. Something that lasted for four months. Eventually something…so horrible…happened, that it…nearly destroyed our mind. So that we wouldn't go insane, our mind fractured.
"That's why you forgot those four months. When our mind split, I was created to hold those memories, because you couldn't handle them. I was created from pain…both physical and mental. Therefore, I'm far more equipped to handle them than you are. That's why when you're in situations where you're liable to take too many hits, I tend to take over." Sobe slowly explained. For the first time in years, Sae was receiving the answers to the questions she had always asked.
"So…the blackouts…the hours of missing time…" Sae trailed off and Sobe nodded.
"Correct. That was me. Sometimes I would come out even when you weren't in danger. I was…" Sobe trailed off, looking away. "…lonely…" She whispered. Sae pulled Sobe into a hug, and she felt Sobe stiffen against her before relaxing into the hug.
"I'm so sorry Sobe…that you had to go through this nearly alone." Sobe's eyes widened in shock.
"I…I tell you that I'm the reason for your blackouts, and you're trying to comfort *me*?!" Sobe pulled away, pushing Sae away from her harshly. "I'm you, but I don't understand you at all!" Sae looked startled but started laughing. "Don't laugh! This isn't funny!"
This just caused Sae to laugh even harder. Sobe found herself sulking. Sae slowly calmed down and looked at Sobe seriously.
"So what exactly was the event that caused our…" Sae trailed off, not sure how to word it. Sobe glanced over at her.
"…Yeah…" Sobe sighed, looking depressed. She stood up and walked towards the screen. While she did so, Sae saw the horrible looking wounds on Sobe's back, that looked like they had only just scabbed over.
"Your back…!" Sobe turned towards Sae and nodded slightly.
"They match the ones that we have outside of here…" Sobe completed Sae's thought. "Alright…" She sighed. "I'll tell you. You…deserve to know." Sobe's eyes glossed over as she started to relive her old memories.
"The Yagudo captured us, I'll say 'me' in order to not confuse you, and brought me to Castle Oztroja. From what I gathered, they sent a message to Father that they had me held hostage. Father, from what I heard, had a permanent limp-"
"You don't remember that?" Sae interrupted and Sobe glared at her for it.
"No. Anything before I was created, I don't remember." She said shortly. Sae brought her hand to her mouth and nodded.
"Sorry…continue…" The words were muffled, but Sobe nodded.
"Obviously, he came after me once he heard that. But it took him four months. During those four months, I was tortured in every way imaginable…" Sobe paused for a moment and then sighed, pain deeply rooted in her eyes.
"That's where we got the scars. I still remember the cell I was in…the tan colored floor was red. The chains…and shackles…" Sobe breathed in shakily. Sae got up and placed a hand on her other's shoulder for comfort. Sobe nodded to her in thanks.
"But eventually, father arrived. He freed me from the cell…we were making our way to the exit…when we were ambushed. Father was…Father was killed in front of me…" Sae's eyes widened and she inhaled sharply.
"Father was…" Sobe nodded.
"Killed because of me…" Sobe looked away, hiding the tears that started falling from her eyes. Sae pulled Sobe into another hug, and for the first time ever:
Sobe broke down. She started crying. She cried for her father, she cried for the unfairness of the world. She cried for her lack of strength and lack of character which led her to her downfall. But most of all, she cried for herself.
Sae meanwhile, simply stood there, holding Sobe and rocking back and forth slightly. Sobe wrapped her arms around her 'lighter self'.
"I wish…you didn't have to shoulder this burden alone, Sobe…I wish I could make this easier for you…" Sobe looked up and wiped the tears from her eyes.
"You want…to help *me*…." She started shaking with laughter while Sae simply stared in confusion. "Thank you…but it's my duty…my purpose…to protect you." Sobe looked up and gently touched Sae's cheek.
"I truly appreciate the thought…but it's my job to hold these memories until you're ready and able to accept them. Your lack of these memories makes you innocent. I want to continue watching you smile and laugh, because then I know that I'm doing my job right. Everyone wants to look after you, Sae. You make people happy, with your smiles and with your caring nature. Someday you'll remember. Someday we'll merge and I'll remember our childhood, while you remember those four months of hell, and I'll be apologizing the entire time." Sobe said quietly, while looking down. Sae nodded and then smiled.
"Sounds like a plan, Sobe. But just a request…next time you feel the need to take control…can you please let me be aware of what's going on? So I don't keep needing to black out?" Sobe stared in shock and then completely cracked up.
"I tell you- hehe- about our past, and you!" A snicker "Want me to just…not make you black out! Promathia and Altana!" Another burst of laughter. "What the hell is *wrong* with you, Sae?!" Sobe's laughter was contagious and Sae soon found herself laughing as well. The two leaned against each other for support as their laughter abated.
Sae quickly found herself yawning and Sobe smirked.
"Tired?" Sae looked a bit sheepish and nodded.
"Yeah a bit…" Sobe let go of Sae and walked up to the pedestal.
"Then step up here, and you'll go to bed. I'll…talk to you in the morning." Sae nodded and stepped up the stairs. As soon as her feet touched the top of the pedestal, she fell to her knees, and leaned against the railing and she was deeply asleep. Sobe watched over Sae quietly for a few minutes.
"Sae…I never thought…that you could be so kind…even to me…" She sighed and stared up at the ceiling. "You surprise even me, my other…"

VI. Day Six: Branded
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Saerun stood in a large forest. She glanced around, recognizing this as a dream. She sighed softly, knowing that whoever would show themselves eventually. She sat down on a log and realized that the forest looked very much like the one in Ronfaure. These type of dreams didn't come naturally. Normally they were a product of…
"Come out Feliz…and give me the message that you wanted to give." She said out loud. There was a soft chuckle and a Blue Mage stepped out from behind a tree and walked slowly to her.
"Oh Sae~run, you always know how to make me laugh…" Feliz walked up to her and gently touched her cheek. Sae stared up into his piercing blue eyes and he smiled at her. He pulled off the veil from his face and then leaned down and kissed her softly. Her eyes widened in shock and then he pulled back with a soft chuckle.
"Not expecting that, Sae~run? I don't see why not…you really are quite the beautiful woman…" His hand wandered and touched her soft hair. His hand slowly brushed against her cheek and he sighed before leaning down and kissing her again. She had been told that being kissed was a very special time in a woman's life, but this time, while it felt nice…it didn't really feel special. But as strange as it sounded, she didn't really want special.
"You and your other…you don't really want romance, do you? You just want-" He was cut off by Sae interrupting.
"What do you want, Feliz…?" Feliz chuckled and pulled back a bit.
"Oh Sae~run…such a cruel mistress you are…" Sae rolled her eyes at his theatrics.
"Yes yes….I'm so cruel. Let's get on with this, shall well? I'd like to get to sleep…" Feliz chuckled again and nodded.
"Very well, my darling…Waoud wishes to speak with you…you've grown so much in such a short amount of time…prove yourself to him, and he may reward you…" Feliz couldn't help but reach out and touch her hair again.
"So soft…" he murmured to himself. She sighed softly and leaned into his touch. He smiled slightly at her response.
"Where should I find him?" Eventually Sae responded, pulling away from his touch and staring at him. He seemed a bit upset at her response.
"In Aht Urgan of course…" Feliz stepped back and vanished, along with the dream state. Sae sat up straight in bed and then sighed.
"Damn it Feliz…" She groaned and leaned back against her pillow, staring at the ceiling. "Where exactly in Aht Urgan…?"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae wandered through Whitegate, looking around. She stopped as she passed by someone who was holding a mirror in their hand. The man was wearing a cloak and was muttering to himself. She walked over to him.
"Excuse me…what are you doing?" The man looked up and smiled slightly.
"I'm a fortune teller. Woudl you like me to tell you your fortune? I require less coin from adventurers due to their…uncertain employment…" A smile pulled at the corners of her mouth and she nodded.
"Sure…what is your name?" The man chuckled.
"I am known as Waoud…the fortune teller. Let's see here…." Watching him mutter into his mirror strangely relaxed her, and her eyes closed as Waoud's did as well. The next thing that she knew, she was somewhere else.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
"Welcome young one…I see you have progressed greatly from what Feliz has told me." Sae looked up and saw a man dressed in full BLU uniform in front of her. She quietly kneeled down in front of him and averted her eyes. This simply made the other chuckle.
"I think that it's time that you search for greater power. Travel to the five staging point and speak to your peers there. Azouph, Dvucca, Mamool Ja, Halvung, Ilrusi. You'll find your peers there." Sae nodded, while still not looking up.
"You are dismissed."
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The vision ended and Sae opened her eyes to find herself staring at Waoud anxiously. He simply smiled at her patiently.
"Was it useful?" Sae nodded and then quickly walked off. Something about him and his "fortunes" were too wierd. And coming from her, that was high praise indeed. Sae walked of and headed to the Chamber of Passage, bought a passage ID and walked up to the teleport.
"Dvucca Isle Staging Point!"
She was quickly warped off.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
She arrived in Caedarva Mire and quickly strode out of the telepoint into the small encampment that had been set up. She glanced around and quickly noticed a fully dressed Blue Mage. She strode over to him.
"Can I help you? Are you here for command verification?" Sae shook her head and held up her hand with the Mark of Zahak upon it.
"No, I'm here because I was told to speak to you." He seemed surprised for a moment, then both happy and depressed at the same time.
"I see. You bear the mark…Hehe…" He quickly burst out laughing, and Sae took a step back in shock. What was wrong with him? But he seemed to be on a roll now. "Do you wish to shed your mortal shell? Was there nothing that bound you to that life? What will you aspire to once your fall is complete?"
My fall? Mortal shell…? What is he talking about?
He chuckled again and then turned to her.
"Are you ready? I'll give you one last chance…to die as a mortal!" She staggered back in shock.
"What?!" Before she could react further, she was hit by a spell from the other mage. She screamed as pain and a burning sensation lashed across her back, and she fell to her knees. Slowly, the pain abated and she forced herself back up to her feet.
"You're alive…" He murmured. "Congratulations. And condolences for the loss of your mortal existence. Tread carefully, Saerun."
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The other four staging points were just as ambiguous and painful as the first. A common theme was "Congratulations and condolences". Talk about oximoronic.
She slowly staggered back to her Moghouse after having spoken to Waoud, and the mysterious other Blue Mage, who gave her a new scimitar to work with. It was a decent weapon. Now if only her back would stop bleeding and burning, she might be able to go out and learn some more spells. Maybe the jungle…she could do with going to the jungle…
"KUPOOOO!!! WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOURSELF, MASTER?!?!"
That would be MogMog… She thought to herself. She didn't even notice the little moogle and instead, just collapsed face down on her bed.
She faintly felt the powerful moogle magic wash over her, relieving some of the pain before she slipped off into sleep.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(*Why are you doing this again? You should be resting in bed!*) Sae was out in Yuhtunga Jungle, having just paid off a white mage to give her a Teleport-Yhoator. Sobe was now pestering her about it.
(*You're just gonna hurt yourself in the long run if you keep doing this!*) Sobe continued on. Sae sighed and shook her head.
"I want to go home Sobe…and that's not gonna happen until I feel ready to. And I won't feel ready until I've learned all the spells that I can!" Sae heard Sobe sigh in their mind.
(*Altana and Promathia, you're stubborn! Why don't you just talk on that linkpearl and check on the others then if you're so worried? It would be better than driving yourself nuts over wondering how they're doing…*) Sae nodded, but then jumped as she heard a loud sound from the linkpearl.
"Nodem?"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
She quickly ran into the library into the library in Whitegate once she got back. What Nodem said had worried her. A demonic woman? Stalkers? What the hell was going on over there?!
(*Sae…we both know that fomors are the closest things to spirits that can appear…outside of halloween time of course. But it's definitely *not* near halloween. Do you think he could just be…*)
Sae shook her head as she started pulling books off of the shelves and sat down at the library with them.
(I don't know…the way that he was talking, it just seemed too real…) She had the sense that Sobe was agreeing with her.
(*Exactly, Sae…*too* real…Do your research if you wish. But if you're really this concerned about him, you'd be better to just head back sooner than later.*) Sae flipped through a few pages of the book she was looking through, scanning for anything that had to do with spirits or apparitions.
(And you don't care for him as well?) There was an akward silence and a strange feeling that she couldn't place filled her heart, which was definitely coming from Sobe.
(Sobe?)
(*Of course I care about him, you twit.*) There was no harshness in her words, just simple matter of factness. Sae took no offense to the words of her other. She had started to learn what Sobe's many expressions and inflections meant. A smile twitched at the corner of Sae's mouth.
(Then let's find something to help him…) She got the feeling of Sobe nodding in agreement.
Over the new few hours, the two of them poured over books and they tossed ideas back and forth. Sobe really was an amazing sounding board, as she tended to look at things in an extremely different way than Sae. If Sae thought something was completely useless, Sobe could find a way to make it helpful. Though no matter what why the two tried to spin what they were reading, they couldn't interpret it in any way other than Nodem had to be hallucinating…
"This is useless…" Sae slammed the book shut and then let her head rest on top of it.
(*I told-*)
(Don't even finish that.) Sobe dutifully shut up.
(*Again, you may be best just doing your best to learn the spells that you can and then head back to San d'Oria. Then you can look after him yourself.*) Sae nodded.
(Then it's decided…once I finish learning these spells…then I'll head back!)

VII. Day Seven: Limits
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae was dreaming. Again. It was getting annoying. Now more than ever, she just wished she could have a straight night of sleep. Learning spells was getting hard on her body, and she found herself getting more and more tired far more easily than before. Part of it was probably the lack of full sleep she'd been getting thanks to him. That and the brands that she recieved wasn't helping either. They were still pretty sore. She had worn an open backed nightgown to bed in order to not aggrevate her sore back, but now…
She glanced down at herself, noticing that she was wearing the same nightgown that she had gone to bed in. Yeah, she was regretting it, considering that these dreams only occurred when *he* decided to make an appearance. Thank god it was at least knee-length…
She was sitting on what appeared to be a padded bench. It was crafted in a very old style that she couldn't place. She was on a porch that was overlooking the ocean. She leaned forward, listening to the sound of the waves crashing into the beach.
"You look stunning…" Came his whisper from behind her. She heard his soft footsteps echo from behind her. She sighed softly in irritation.
"This was looking to be a good dream…until you came here…" She muttered. She felt his presense directly behind her, and he chuckled.
"What? You don't like the scenery I chose?" She jumped and hissed as his hand brushed against her back, aggrivating the barely healed brands.
"Aren't they beautiful…? Especially on you…" he murmured softly. She glanced over her shoulder at him, to see that he didn't have his gloves or his veil on, though he was in full BLU uniform besides that.
"I don't like being branded like a dhalmel…" She said shortly. He chuckled softly and sat down next to her on the bench.
"Mmm…but at least they look good on you…all Blue Mages have them you know…you're one step closer to doning our armor…you're so close to the power that you wanted dearest…" He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, brushing against one of the brands. She stiffened in pain.
"What… do you want, Feliz?" She said between clentched teeth.
"To tell you that Waoud needs to speak to you again…" She nodded and then shrugged off his shoulder.
"Fine, you told me your message, please get out!" He looked surprised for a moment before his expression of surprise was replaced with one of smug amusement.
"But that's not the only reason that I'm here…" He reached up and touched her hair, letting it run in between his fingers, as he pushed it away from her face. She sighed in annoyance.
"Alright, what's the other reason?" She said, clearing just humoring him. He stopped playing with her hair and set his hand down on her shoulder. The skin on his hand was slightly rough with callouses, though not rough enough to scratch her. The smug look faded from his face and he actually looked…anxious?
"I wanted to get to know you, Saerun…" He dropped the strange accent that he normally spoke her name in. She turned and looked at him in shock.
"Wait…what?" Feliz turned away, looking almost embaressed. She was entranced by his show of actual emotion.
"I wanted to get to know you…" He turned to her and gently touched the side of her face. "You're beautiful, you have such a kind and trusting nature…but I know very little of you outside of why you came here to the Empire in the first place. Will you tell me about yourself?" Her eyes widened in shock and she glanced out towards the waves.
"I suppose so…" She stood up and walked down the stairs from the porch to the beach, and noticed that she was barefooted. "Come on…" She walked down towards the beach and waded into the water until she was mid-calf level in the waves. He followed her down to the water and stood just behind her to the side of her. For the next hour she told him about herself, leaving out information about Sobe, and the events that led to her creation. While she did so, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder again, this time being careful not to touch the wounds on her back, and played with her hair.
"I see…" He said softly once she finished talking. He gently turned her so that she was facing him, and they locked eyes. They stared quietly at each other and for the first time, she almost felt like she had a connection with him. He smiled slightly at her before growing serious and the smile faded.
"That must have been so hard for you…I'm so sorry…I can't imagine how hard it was for you to not have him around when you needed him the most…" He gently cupped her face with his hand. She leaned her head into his hand slightly and looked up at him, tears starting to form in her eyes.
"Shhh…don't cry…you're too sweet to ever cry…" He brushed the tears from her eyes with his free hand. "I'm here for you if you need me…Unlike him…I won't leave you…we're connected, you and I…don't you feel it?" She glanced away from him, still lost in thought about Aedyn and how he had left without a word to her. He sighed softly and tilted her chin up so that she was now looking him in the eyes.
"I. Will. Not. Leave. You." He said each word distinctly. "He didn't deserve you…you're too good for him…No one should ever be able to just walk away from you…" For the first time, she felt…hope. Maybe she wasn't as unlovable as she had thought she had been before.
"Really…?" Feliz nodded firmly.
"Yes…" The two locked eyes again and his eyes softened as he stared down at her. Slowly he leaned his face down to hers, and her breath caught in her throat.
"Feliz…" She whispered softly, when his lips were but a breath away from hers.
"Saerun…" His voice was just as soft as her own. After a moment's pause, he closed the distance between their lips. Even though he had kissed her before, something was different about this. This felt like something…more. She sighed into the kiss and moved closer to him. His arms wrapped around her gently and pulled her closer. Eventually he pulled back with a soft groan, but didn't let go of her.
"You're going to kill me, Sae…" A slight smile twitched at the corners of her mouth. She rested her head against his shoulder and he smiled.
"Alright…I need to go…and you need to get some sleep…Good night, Sae…" He leaned down and kissed her again quickly, before the dream faded away.
And she slept.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
She walked over to Waoud, her Immortal's Scimitar at her waist. Waoud noticed her and nodded as a greeting to her.
"I see that you're back…you wish for me to tell your fortune again?" Sae nodded to him and he smiled slightly. "Well then…close your eyes and open your mind…"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The second that she opened her eyes into the vision, she wished that she hadn't. Her body was consumed by excruciating pain, and she screamed as she fell to her knees, clutching her arms to her chest. It was absolute agony, of the likes she had never experienced before. She barely sensed a person step up to her until they talked.
"The phenomenon assaulting you, is a result of the blue magic invading every cell of your body. While your physical form struggles to contain this energy, your soul is crying out in agony. This is my private domain- a place which is isolated from reality, the state of a soul's deterioration is far more obvious…"
My soul's…deterioration…? What's…going on…?! The other Blue Mage chuckled at her.
"You can't even bring yourself to stand…you must have gorged yourself on the essence of your enemies to reach this condition…"
How does…that have to do…with anything…? She slowly tried to push herself off of her knees, but instead, she fell face first to the floor. He chuckled at her actions.
"It is not for me to prevent your self-destruction. Your limits are your own to conquer. There is no salvation for you. Either you wait for oblivion to claim you, or continue to writhe within the energies of your foes. You stand at a fork in the road."
She stopped trying to push herself up, and concentrated on trying to focus on what he was saying through the agony consuming her.
No…salvation… The words echoed through her head.
"Should you decide on a life consumed with the struggle for power, I can show you the path. Travel to the Navukgo Execution Chamber and dispose of the Trolls there. You are dismissed."
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae gasped for breath as she came out of the vision and looked up at Waoud who was staring at her knowingly.
"Be careful on your way." Sae nodded curtly and walked off towards the Chamber of Passage. She double checked to make sure that she had enough silent oils, prism powders and a reraise earring on her before heading out to Mount Zhayolm.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(Sobe, what exactly was that?) Sae was nearly at the Navukgo Execution Chamber as she asked her other about the vision earlier.
(*I have no idea, Sae…But it sure didn't sound good at all. The deterioration of our soul? Our self-destruction? We're missing some very important facts here, and we need to find out what they are.*) Sae nodded, opening and using another sneak oil and prism powder to get by the flans that populated the area.
(He mentioned gorging ourselves on our enemies…something about learning the spells must be what caused our…deterioration? I don't really feel any different, do you?) Sobe shook her head mentally.
(*No, other than we've been getting tired quicker than usual maybe…*) Sae looked thoughtful.
(That's true, we have been, haven't we?) Sobe made a noise of agreement before falling quiet. Sae quickly noticed the entrance into the chamber and paused just outside of the door. She double checked to make sure that she had all of her proper spells in line. She then stepped inside.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
It was chaos. There were two very large trolls creating mayhem. There were two very large trolls that turned their attention to her as soon as she stepped inside.
"Erk-…!" Sae took a quick, deep breath before starting to cast on herself.
"Cocoon! Metallic Body!" She quickly cast both spells in quick succession. The two trolls quickly charged at her. She quickly pulled out her scimitars.
"Pinecone Bomb!" A shadowy treant appeared in front and dropped a pinecone onto one of the trolls, dealing damage and then putting it to sleep. She swiftly moved out of the way of the other troll's club.
"Headbutt!" A quadav appeared in front of her and headbutted the nonsleeping troll and knocked it back several yalms. During this time, she casted a Refueling on herself.
(*Sae, let me handle this!*) Sobe called out. Sae nodded mentally and fell back, watching. Sobe smirked once she was in control, and then leaped forward, swords slashing at the troll.
"Mandibular Bite!" An antlion quickly snatched the troll and did some massive damage. At the same time, the troll hit her with an Overthrow, which hit her dead on. Sobe staggered back, stunned slightly.
"Sickle Slash!" The troll got knocked back. Sobe quickly casting a Wild Carrot on herself for some healing, before leaping forward again with her swords.
(Sobe! Did you feel that?!) Sobe groaned slightly as she got distracted and got nailed by it's club.
"Blooddrain! Bludgeon!"
(*I'm feeling a lot of things right now, Sae! And most of them aren't pleasant!*) The troll staggered back from her onslaught. The other troll chose this time to wake up and start running after her.
"Pinecone bomb!" She put the other troll back to sleep and quickly finished off the other troll.
(Every time we cast, there's a slight tugging! Feel for it!)
Sobe took a moment to cure herself back up, and recast haste on herself. As she did, she frowned. Sae was right, there was a slight tugging at her chest when she kept casting.
(*Is that what he meant?!*) Sae nodded mentally.
(I think so! Let's finish this up though!) As Sobe launched into an offense against the remaining troll, Sae winced mentally at the constant tugging that was pulling at her.
I need to find a way to stop this…Please…I need the power to stop this…and to protect myself…and my friends… She closed her eyes mentally and then focused deep within herself. I must have it…I WILL have it!
Sobe got knocked back and petrified by a Rock Smash from the troll. Sae clenched her fist.
I won't lose myself…not to this stupid magic…! I CONTROL THIS MAGIC, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND! Suddenly, her focus brushed against a new power source. She grasped a hold of it tightly.
Sobe's petrification finally wore off, and she gasped for breath, low on health. She headbutted the troll, and took the time to cast a few Wild Carrots on herself. All of a sudden, she felt a new power flood through her, which knocked the breath from her. She no longer felt as though she was about to burst. Like when she first started this job…she was an empty vessel again. But this time, she wasn't powerless. A smirk grew on her face.
"Oh, you're going down now!"
(*Sae, I don't know what you did, but I love you for it!*)
Sobe quickly disposed of the troll and smirked.
(*Damn, that feels a lot better…Let's go check in with that fortune teller, ok?*) Sae quickly took control again, and pulled out a warp scroll and went back to Whitegate.

She was in the vision world again. However, this time, there was one crucial difference: she felt no pain. She grinned at the raised eyebrow that the other Blue Mage gave her.
"So I see you've overcome your limits. Very well. I have received a report from the Imperial Army on the success of your task. Your skills are commendable. In light of this, I give you leave to don the Magus armor. This marks your entrance into the ranks of the Immortals. Congratulations."
The Immortals, huh…? Cool, I get to wear the armor now…but where…? He cut her off from her musing.
"Visit the store named on this envelope to receive the armor you've earned." She took the envelope from him and then turned to leave when she was stopped by him.
"Do not forget…" Sae stopped and turned to look at him. "Our lives are devoted to the protection of the Empress. Nothing more, nothing less. We are beasts that owe our existance to the forbearance of Her Magnificence…"
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The vision faded out, and Sae very nearly laughed out loud.
('Our lives our devoted to the protection of the Empress and nothing more'? Hah…no thanks. I've got my own reason for doing this…and it's sure not to protect some Empress…) Sobe laughed mentally at her.
(*No kidding…*)
(C'mon Sobe, let's get this armor, and get to bed!) Sobe nodded mentally to her other.
Mentally, Sobe turned her attention into their mindscape, where a large green vine was starting to grow along a crack in the far wall of their mindscape. Sobe walked over to the vine and was about to touch it, when it moved forward and tried to grab her wrist. Sobe gasped and quickly jumped back.
"I don't know what this is…or what's going on…but it's not good…"

VIII. Day Eleven: Realizations
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
It was nighttime again. They were on the beach, sitting in the shallow water. The sky was clear, showing the stars twinkling in the sky; the full moon illuminating their faces. He was sitting back, relaxing, while she was laying down, her head in his lap. He was speaking softly, running his hand through her hair. She was staring off, her eyes glazed over as if in a daze or trance.
He was wearing his usual BLU uniform minus the veil and gloves, as he usually did in her dreams. She was wearing a long pale lavendar silk nightgown. It was a sleeveless gown that clung to her every curve. Her mind felt fuzzy, but she was content. His touch felt nice, it was gentle and warm. She sighed softly and he smiled down at her warmly.
"…That's when I met Brian…he was one of the civilians trapped in Al Zhabi when the Undead Swarm invaded. He was no adventurer, but he still decided that he wasn't going to go down without a fight. He was a few years older than me, and at the time, I was only 16.
"I had just joined the Immortals, and I was assigned to helping the situation in Al Zhabi. I saw a civilian get cornered by Lamia, and Boom! I nailed it with its own Hysteric Barrage!" She smiled and giggled softly at his sound effects. He grinned down at her, bolstered by her amusement.
"So then, I defended him until we pushed the Undead forces out of Al Zhabi, and we were friends for quite a while…" His voice trailed off and she glanced up at him in concern. She reached up and touched his cheek gently and he looked down at her, sadness in his eyes.
"What happened?" She murmured softly.
"We were friends for years…and he did his best to learn the basics of fighting. But during another attack on Al Zhabi, he went to volunteer and distribute items to the fighters…he was killed during it." Sae slowly sat up, the first that she had moved the entire night so far. The light gown the she was wearing, dripped with water, clinging tightly to her. She gently touched his face with her hand, and he looked up slowly at her, and their eyes met. She sighed softly, still in her daze.
"I'm so sorry to hear that…you two were close?" He nodded slightly and then leaned his head into her hand, his eyes closing.
"We were best friends for years…" Sae leaned in and kissed him gently, her way of trying to comfort him. He kissed her back, wrapping his arms around her, running his hand over her back gently. He pulled back a moment later and smiled at her softly.
"Thank you Sae…" She smiled back at him brightly. He chuckled and then pulled her onto his lap, with her back against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her stomach and pulled her close, resting his chin on her shoulder. She giggled slightly as he began kissing her neck gently.
"You shouldn't be laughing…" He murmured against her neck. "It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong…" The words and the sensations from his mouth against her neck quickly made her shut up, and a shiver run down her back. Her head fell to the side, leaving her neck and shoulder more exposed to him, and he chuckled.
"Heh…that's better, sweetheart…" Her eyes fluttered closed. Her mind was fuzzy, she couldn't think straight. In fact, she hadn't been able to think straight since the dream began. It was almost as if she had been…
What was she about to say?
She forgot everything she had been thinking. He chuckled again.
"Don't think, my sweet Sae…I'm here to help you…I want to take your pain away…will you let me?" He bit down on her shoulder, and she gasped in both pain and pleasure. She went limp in his arms and he smirked.
"What's this? Have I found a weakpoint, my Sae?" Just to test it, he bit down again, a bit harder, and she winced, as he broke the skin. He gently licked at the wound he had created, healing it over.
"Didn't know…you were…a vampyr…" She barely managed to form the proper words. He just smirked and kissed the wound gently.
"There's so~ much you don't know about me, Sae-chan…" He whispered into her ear, and she shivered again. She couldn't think…why couldn't she think straight…? He pulled back a bit, and pushed the straps of the gown off her shoulders, before kissing the revealed skin beneath it.
"Feliz…please…" She whispered, almost in a sultry voice. He groaned, and pulled her closer.
"Saerun…" Suddenly, he pushed her down to the ground, and he kissed her harshly. She whimpered, never breaking from the daze that had overtaken her mind.
However, one moment he was above her, and the next, he wasn't. The dream shattered, and Sae broke out of her daze, to find herself standing in darkness. Her eyes widened in shock, and she glanced around the blackness that had overtaken the dream. Feliz was on the ground, while Sobe was standing in between Sae and Feliz.
"Now that just wasn't fair…" Feliz muttered, while quickly pulling himself back up to his feet. Sobe pulled out two daggers, getting into a battlestance.
"No, what isn't fair is you invading our mind. Get out, Feliz, and don't you dare come back unless you'd like to see what happens when you're killed in our mind." Feliz smirked at Sobe.
"Ahh…you're jealous aren't you? If you wanted to join us, all you had to do was ask…" Sobe literally snarled at him, and then jumped at him, slashing with his dagger. Feliz barely had a second to defend himself, before Sobe was on top of him, stabbing and slashing at him. Feliz quickly jumped back, bloodied and bruised, glaring at Sobe.
"GET. OUT. NOW!" The next moment, Feliz was gone. Sae stared in shock at the scene. Sobe sheathed her daggers and then turned to Sae, not glaring, but certainly not happy. Finally, her shock faded, and Sae glared at her other.
"What was that for?!" Sobe's jaw dropped.
"You…wanted me to let him take advantage of you like that?!" Sobe demanded. Sae shook her head.
"He wasn't taking advantage of me! I *wanted* it, Sobe!" Sobe shook her head in disgust, with a scoff.
"He was manipulating you, Sae! You're lonely, after what happened with Aedyn, I know that. But you don't need to set your sights so low, with a creep like him!" Sae continued glaring, and Sobe shifted slightly uncomfortable. She wasn't used to her happier other being angry, especially at her.
"I don't care!" Sae blurted out, and Sobe blinked, taken aback by the vehemence in her voice. Sae took a step forward angrily, while Sobe stepped back, almost…scared. "Damn it, Sobe, it's just a damn dream! You couldn't even let me be loved in my own dream?!" Sobe scoffed again.
"That wasn't *love*, Sae! That was *lust*! That was absolutely nothing but lust! And doesn't it bother you that he *somehow* has access to our mind to influence your dreams?! He's a *creep*, Sae! As soon as he gets what he wants from you, he'll just drop you faster than a Self-Destructing Bomb!" Sae turned away, sulking.
"Just go, Sobe…" Sobe walked up to her, and placed a hand on her other's shoulder.
"Sae…" Sae spun around, and shoved Sobe away from her.
"GO AWAY!" Sobe's eyes widened in shock, before nodding stiffly, and vanishing. She fell into a fitful sleep.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
(*You're annoyed at me, aren't you? *) Sae was sulking slightly, so she didn't bother responding to her alter. Sae felt the unease from Sobe. Sobe wasn't used to being ignored by her other, and it was driving her nuts.
(*Sae…will you let me explain?*) Sae was walking through Whitegate, making her way to Lathuya, who hopefully had one of the last pieces of her armor for her. Sobe shifted uncomfortably. She hated being ignored, simply because he she no one else to talk to.
(*Sae…?*) Sae frowned as she was walking. Sobe sounded really upset…And of course, Sae hated it when she upset others.
(Later.) She said shortly, and Sobe's unease vanished and she quieted. Sae walked up to Lathuya who looked up at Sae and nearly started panicking. Again.
"Oh! Oh! It's you! The master is here, I'll go get him for you!" Lathuya quickly ducked into the back. Sae shook her head in amusement. It was so strange for someine to fear her, all because of a mark on her hand…A moment later, Lathuya came back out with Kushdeel, the master craftsman. Kushdeel was holding a light blue cloth in his hands, and Sae very nearly started jumping in excitement. Finally!
"Oh good, it's you. I'd call this one of my best works yet. Step back here and try on your uniform!" He ushered her into a fitting room, shoved the new piece of gear into her arms and walked out. She blinked and unfolded the new piece of armor to see a beautiful light blue and white jubbah.
(That's beautiful…) Sobe nodded, also in awe.
(*It really is…Try on the rest of the uniform!*) She quickly slipped into the jubbah, and the rest of the armor she had obtained. The only thing that she was missing now was the keffiyeh. She glanced at herself in the mirror and smiled.
"So close…soon, I'll be able to go home…"
(*Do you think you'll be able to be in San d'Oria without getting depressed?*) She paused a moment, and she watched the smile fall from her face in the mirror. She ran a hand through her hair.
(I think so…) Sobe sighed.
(*You need to be sure, Sae…none of this 'I think so' stuff*) Sae ran a finger along the beautiful stitches in the jubbah.
(I know…at least it wasn't very hard to be in Jeuno during the competition yesterday.) Sobe stayed quiet, but sae got the sense that she agreed with her. Sae stepped out of the changing room and back out onto the street. Kushdeel nodded to himself while Lathuya just looked scared again.
(Am I really that frightening?) Sobe scoffed.
(*You couldn't be scary if you tried.*)
(Oi!)
"Yes, yes…absolutely perfect, if I do say so myself!" Sae was broken out of her conversation by Kushdeel admiring his work.
"It's absolutely stunning, sir. Thank you." Kushdeel nodded, nearly preening from her praise.
"Thank you for your patronage. Unfortunately, I cannot provide the final piece for you. Go speak with your supervisors in the Imperial Whitegate. Sae nodded and saluted him. Kushdeel returned the salute and qucikly returned into his shop.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
At the Imperial Whitegate, Sae put her weapons away and walked up to the door. The guards took one glance at her Blue Mage Uniform before ushering her in. Apparently being a Blue Mage earned her some modicum of respect. She walked into the Royal Court and saw the BLU from her visions. She swiftly kneeled before him, knowing subconsciously that it was expected of her.
"Ah, Saerun…you're just in time." She bowed her head and stayed quiet.
"We need you to go to Caedarva Mire and exterminate as many Soulflayers as you can. They've become…quite a nuisance." She nodded in understanding. "You will know the area when you see it. They tend to congregate together. An Immortal will debrief you after your mission. You are dismissed." Sae nodded again, and then stood up and walked out.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae took the Dvucca Isle Staging point and quickly strode out of the Staging area. She made sure that she had a reraise earring active before she carefully meaneauvered around an imp. The imp turned and she stopped dead, it was just barely looking to the side of her. Thankfully it hadn't appeared to have spotted her. She qucilky ran past it before it could attack her. She tossed a silent oil and a prism powder on herself and she started wandering around the Mire.
(*What exactly is a soulflayer, Sae?*) She ran by a qutrub and dodged another imp.
(I'm not sure…but he said that they're congregated together…) All of a sudden, Sae stopped.
(I know what they look like…) her mental voice was weak with fear. Sobe picked up on it immediately.
(*Sae? What is it?*) Sae stared at the disgusting pink squid-like hume-oids. A deep sense of fear overcame her. She didn't want to fight them, she wanted to turn around and run far, far away. They were evil.
(*Sae! Focus!*) Sobe yelled at her. Sae's hands clenched around her scimitars, but she hesitated.
(*Stop hesitating!*) She was about to attack when another wave of evil flowed off of the soulflayers, and she whimpered, barely stopping herself from running away. Sobe groaned in frustration and then stepped in and took control.
(*I see why this bothered you…*) Besides the comment, she didn't appear to be affected. She didn't hesitate to attack. There were only three soulflayers in the group, but each one was difficult to get rid of. They were BLM mobs, extremely fond of ice spikes and casting -AGA3 spells. Her Blank Gaze and HeadButt spells were getting overworked.
(*Gods, these things are annoying!*) Sobe remarked as she finished off the second soulflayer. Sae remained quiet, simply watching her other's fighting style. Sobe pulled out and drank a hi-ether, followed by a yagudo drink. She put the last soulflayer with a pinecomb bomb, while she waited for her mana to refresh. She took the moment to catch her breath.
(I feel like I'm forcing you to do my fighting for me…) Sae muttered softly. A grin appeared on Sobe's face.
(*Don't feel bad, Sae…I enjoy fighting. You're definitely not forcing me to do it. Plus, let's face it…*) Sobe's grin grew further and she said teasingly. (*I'm a much better fighting than you!*)
(Hey!)
The third soulflayer woke up and attacked. Sobe quickly launched herself at it, and started beating it up. Eventually it died and Sobe let out a sigh of relief.
"There…done. Let's head back, shall we…?" Sobe was about to pull out a warp cudgel, when she was stopped by the sound of clapping nearby.
"Good job, Sobe-chan…" Sobe stiffened and glared at the Blue Mage who stepped out of the shadows.
"Feliz." She growled at him. Feliz looked amused.
"Not bad, not bad…but what else could I expect from you?" Sobe pulled out her scimitars again and settled into her battle stance against Feliz.
"An ass kicking like the one I gave you last night?" Feliz chuckled and walked forward towards Sobe.
"Put your weapons away, Sobe. I'm here to give you your reward from Raubahn." Sobe watched him warily, and then sheathed her swords. Feliz nodded to her.
"The Magus armor that we wear doesn't simply enhance the magic of a Blue Mage. It brings you to the edge of the beast, and unshackles the power that you are subconsciously repressing. It's other property, is to suppress the physical "Transformation" of the vessel."
(Transformation…?) Sobe had no idea what he was talking about either.
"Don't rely on it to save you. Those who drown themselves in blue magic and fail to control the power within…fall to the fate of the transformation. They lose the ability to maintain their form, and the mortal vessel gets destroyed…" Feliz looked thoughtful, but then laughed.
"So you have taken the lives of three collegues that you have never known. Good job." Sobe's eyes widened in horror.
"The soulflayers…they're…blue mages!" Feliz nodded to her.
"They used to be. But regardless, you have earned your reward. Congratulations." He held out a piece of armor, and she took it. It was the Magus Keffiyeh. Sobe put it on, and the clipped the veil across her face. Feliz walked up to her, and reached a hand up to touch her face. Sobe quickly slapped his hand away and glared at him.
"What do you *want* Feliz? Why do you keep invading Sae's dreams? And how?" Feliz chuckled and backed up a step.
"Why wouldn't I want your other? So cute and innocent…I'm curious to see what would happen if…" He trailed off, looking thoughtful. Sobe simply glared harder.
"If you seduced her and broke up with her right after you accomplished what you wanted? I heard your mind…" Sobe got the distinct impression that he was smirking, as his voice was simply too pleased with himself.
"That's one way to put it I suppose…" Sobe pulled out her scimitar and pointed it at him angrily.
"You built up her trust in you and manipulated her through her already broken heart!" Feliz burst out laughing in amusement at Sobe's protective anger.
"And it worked quite well, if I do say so myself!" Sobe snarled and lept forward and slashed at him with her scimitars. Feliz easily lept back away from her attacks.
"Remember, Sobe!" He sounded far too amused. "I gave you the powers that you have! I'll always have a connection to your mind! The second that you let down your guard, I'll be there!" He vanished. Sobe felt an overwhelming pain in her chest and she sighed.
(*Now do you understand, Sae…? He was…taking advantage of you…*) Sobe's mental voice was soft, as she could physically feel Sae's emotional pain. She heard a sob from Sae mentally. Sobe sighed softly and then warped back to Whitegate. She stepped into her moghouse and laid down on the bed, after briefly greeting MogMog. She closed her eyes, and pulled back into their mindscape.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Sae was sitting on the ground in front of the couch, tears flowing from her eyes. Sobe walked over to her, and then kneeled down and wrapped her arms around Sae. Just as Sae had done for Sobe when Sobe broke down, Sobe gently rocked Sae back and forth, while Sae just cried.
"Shhh…." Sobe whispered. "I'm so sorry, Sae…I'm so sorry…"
Unbeknownst to the pair, the single vine along the back wall was growing rapidly. It split, into two vines, four vines, eight vines. The vines continued splitting and growing, until they covered the entire back wall. The first signs of a crack started to appear in the wall.
Sobe glanced up over Sae's shoulder once she fell asleep and saw the now vine-covered wall and her eyes widened in shock and fear.
