Hello, there! My wife and I are actually brand new to FFXI. Well, almost. I played a bit before. I've seen that the earliest post was a journal entry eleven days ago, and the before that roughly a month ago, in this subforum.
I'm curious as to if y'all are still active, and, if so, how open you are to newcomers.
Yo, welcome to the world of Vana'diel. I'm a returning player but I'm still a greenhorn when it comes to the game. I hope that you and your wife enjoy it as much as I do.
I've just looked the site over myself and decided to apply.
I sure hope that they are active because I could deffinatly use a since of community when it comes to ffxi. The playerbase is mostly high level players doing end game content however most linkshells and players are willing to help you progress. I still haven't been able to find that sense of communtiy that I really enjoy in mmo's I'm hoping to find here.
We are still active, however as a group we are pulling double-duty in both XI and XIV, so we are not active -all- the time. Tuesdays and Saturdays are our scheduled RP days, so there's always people on during those times (this Saturday would be a break from the norm, being a holiday weekend and various Real-Life goings-on). Rest of the week, it's when people feel like logging in to do whatever. Myself and another member have mostly open schedules, so we can be on practically any time.
We are welcoming to new players, and we are willing to help catch newcomers up on the old content (three nations, Rise of the Zilart, and Chains of Promathia have been completed), though this isn't necessary to join in the RP. We are currently coming up on the end of Treasures of Aht Urghan which is primarily 65+ content, so you do have time to get some levels behind you before we go into the mini-expansions and later into Wings of the Goddess.
Feel free to ask questions about our lore and how we run our RP, though please excuse us if we're a bit slow on responding for the next week or so holiday weekend and some Real Life happenings will be keeping a few of us away.
"How hard did you hit him?" "Quite hard, actually. For some reason he irritated me." They stared back to where the Grolim lay. "You're getting to be more like Belgarath every day," Silk told him. "You do more damage out of simple irritation than most men can do in a towering rage."
I appreciate that you'd be willing to help us get up to speed, thank you. Is your lore different than the game lore? Is there anything important I need to know about RP lore, or for actual game lore, a site I could use? And, if you don't mind, tell me about about RP here. I'd really appreciate it (though I'm almost certain we're going to apply!)
Lastly (for now), are there any particular naming conventions that should be adhered to for the races?
It's not that our lore is different than the actual game lore, we just approach it a bit differently. We go expansion-by-expansion, so some things just "don't exist" just yet (Cavernous Maws, Abyssea content, SoA travel/content as examples). We are also on year 888 CE, which is twenty-five years after the end of the Crystal War (game mechanics will claim it's only been twenty years, but the game mechanics haven't changed in twelve years >_>).
As for actual RP, the expansion plots provide the canvas for a lot of our storylines (and several of us have set our characters up to 'grow' in certain area based on the progress through the expansions). We do have socials and run other events/extra plots as well. Currently right now, we are towards the end of Treasures of Aht Urghan, and Aht Urghan has totally chewed up the current cast – they've had little joy since heading across the ocean.
… I'm totally nodding off at the keyboard at the moment (long, busy day), so I'm sorry that I'm not putting in as much info as I'd like for this. If I can sneak some time over the weekend/before Tuesday to answer more questions for you, I will. As of right now, in the morning I'll be heading to a place that didn't have electricity until fifteen years ago, and I don't even know if I'll have service on my cellphone.
In the meantime, go ahead and start looking through the lore and start thinking about what you'd like to do. And here's hoping that you'll want to join us~

I'll start looking up the lore. Wouldn't it be hard to get our characters up to level speed in order to progress with the others, though? If I remember right, from my brief stay before, leveling is incredibly slow.
Talk to you when you're able!
I'll start looking through things and forming ideas. Thank you. Have a nice…whatever it is!
I can assist with that. With the new trusts system in the game as well as the records of emenince it makes leveling a lot faster. shoot me a friend request in-game (weylyn) or just randomly /tell me throughout the day until you catch me online. I'd be happy to help you level as I need to do it myself :P In any case you should be able to level to do aht urghan within a week.
Another question however. Will anyone be online to give us linkpearls?
One of the pearlsacks (people who distribute pearls) can usually be on if given a specific time. We have a lot of variety in our schedules (work, etc) but generally someone can make it work. :)
As a european, I won't be busy with 4th July stuff today and for the incoming few days. Should you be on and seeking for a linkpearl, look up Kenjii, Chiaral or Roymustangx. Those are the three characters I'm more likely to be on.
To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.
"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." – Doug Walker
