The Grand Duchy of Jeuno despite being the youngest of the four nations, having only achieved independance eighty years ago, has quickly established itself as the main actor on the world's stage. Originally a small fishing village under the rule of Bastok, Jeuno was built on a small island where a series of bridges was built to span the gaps between the two continents of Mindartia and Quon. Its location was an ideal crossroad, and quickly all three nations had built roads leading to the community hoping to utilize it as a hub for trade, thus as more traders permanently settled into the region, Jeuno grew farther away from a simple fishing village and more into a cosmopolitan traders city.
However in 855ce fishermen rescued two young men found adrift out at sea. The two boys would call themselves Kam'lanaut and Eald'narche and claimed to be the students of a Great Sage learning the ways of the ancients, and stated that while sailing to Windurst their boat had capsized and sent them adrift. The city was full of the hustle and bustle of young people attempting to launch get rich quick schemes so the two were overlooked despite their odd appearance. Kam'lanaut quickly granted his adopted city a great boon, when he began to teach the lost secrets of crystal synthesis, the science of crafting used by many adventurers today. Most people couldn't believe their eyes at first when the young man would create actually goods using nothing more than actual ingredients and a small elemental crystal. This new science quickly spread amongst the people of Jeuno filling the city stores, and the people's pockets with gil. With fewer people needing to focus on the everyday process of manufacturing goods, the city quickly branched out into more loftier sciences as art, and philosophy. It of course came to no suprise that the following year Kam'lanaut was selected to be Jeuno's representative to Bastok.
People began to question their choice though when one of Kam'lanaut's first actions as representative was to give the knowledge of synthesis to the other three nations. The people were outraged at this betrayal, after all Kam'lanaut had become a household name, a major force in driving the people of Jeuno onto great things how could he just give the other nations such a wonderful secret, even if one of those countries was their progenitor state. Kam'lanaut quickly quelled the populace by explaining that in doing such a thing he was protecting the town who had begun to attract the green eyes of jealousy from its neighbors over its resent explosion of wealth. He went on to then reveal his plan for the construction of 'Heaven's Bridge' a massive tower that would take care of all of the cities living needs. The populace was stunned but supported the plan and construction was completed in just a few short years. Quickly the area was flooded with a new wave of craftsfolk.
Jeuno was officialy recognized as a Duchy in 859 when deligations from Bastok, San d'Oria, and Windurst signed a proclimation of declaration, and further pronounced Kam'lanaut to be the Archduke. Many craftsmen at the time scoffed at this, believing Jeuno to already be the superior nation, and viewed the other three formally stating it as a means to restrain the Archduke. Kam'lanaut declared Jeuno to be a neutral merchantilism, opening its doors to merchants everywhere attracting the attention of several goblin traders. This development further cemented Jeuno as a melting pot of culture, on a sure path to enlightment for all peoples.
Then the Crystal War began. A tribe of beastmen known as the Gigas appeared on the Isle of Qufim north of Jeuno and began besieging the city. Kam'lanaut acting calmly rallied the people in defense of the city and sent emissaries to the other three nations, proposing an alliance. Some note it that the Archduke almost seemed to have had foresight that the war was coming due to the swiftness of his actions. After unifying all three nations against their common threat, Kam'lanaut orchestrated a bold plan that would draw the bulk of the beastmen's forces around Jeuno. Kam'lanaut fought at the front lines of the armies and in a month the Beastmen forces had been broken, withdrawing into retreat and giving the Altanan Alliance the opportunity for the counteroffensive, which would ultimately lead to winning the war.
Since the end of the Crystal War the Duchy has become a major player on the world's stage. Hosting both the Conference of Nations, and the Conquest Comittee, Jeuno is invovled largely in the affairs of other nations. Also of note is that Jeuno has reclaimed the ancient technology of the ancients in the creation and usage of airships, which have by an large replaced more mundane methods of travel and transport of goods. Everyday thousands of adventurers come and go and the city flourishes. The entire city is actually one large tower known as 'Heaven's Bridge' and is seperated into four sections from top to bottom:
Ru'Lude Gardens is the top most section of the tower, it houses the Archduke's Palace, and the embassies of the other three nations. the entire district is considered to be a city park, and one can see for miles on clear days. The top of the tower gets its name from the original home of the Archduke, that was destroyed in a seige by the Gigas during the Crystal War. The Archduke conducts his business in this district and no one is allowed to even schedule an audiance with him without obtaining a permit first.
Next traveling down the tower is Upper Jeuno, this is a district of craftsman and the clocktower is a symbol of the advances and teamwork of all the tradesmen in the area. Most of the buildings extended from the residental tower are built on the Artisan bridge which connects to Batalia Downs. The local Cathedral of the Goddess is located in this district and the leader of the faithful in Jeuno is Mother Chiphraix. This is also the medical center of the town with an Infirmary for Adventurers and commoners, and a Veterinary Hospital that seems mostly interested in the care of Chocobos. For those of you interested in machinery and engineering check out the large cranes that haul goods up from the port far below.
Lower Jeuno is the third segment from the top of the residental tower, built on the Market Bridge, this is the beating heart of Jeuno. Shops, inns, taverns, and even a goblin Junkshop can be found here. Fortunetellers, and Soothsayers also find a market in this district. However those not of an adventuring bent seeking gainful employment can visit the Chamber of Commerce which is housed across from the Auction House. The Chamber is charged with assisting citizens with job placement as well as the arbitration of labor around the city. The Merry Minstrel is probably the most famous club in the city proper, a quiet hang out during the day but at night, becomes a rip-roaring bar where Bards from around the nations perform. Those seeking a quieter night would do well to check into Neptune's Spire a quiet little inn featuring Far Eastern decore. And if you've ever wanted to see a beastman upclose when they wern't trying to rearrange your innards check out Muckvix's Junk Shop, while most folk may not take an interest in what the goblins are selling the little beastmen are masters at tailoring and modifying clothes and inventory sacks. Just don't poke Mucky, he bites.
Finally at the bottom of Heaven's Tower rests Port Jeuno. Built along the Harbor Bridge this is where the airship terminals are located. Airships leading to Bastok, San d'Oria, Windurst, and the Island of Elshimo are coming and going all hours of the day. Also at the very base of the tower is a tunnel which leads to the Island of Qufim, though a dangerous place history seekers, and explorers will not be disappointed in the massive structure called Delkfutt's Tower that was built by the ancients so long ago.
And there you have it, Jeuno in a nutshell. The Freeguard
