While this had been discussed with Avina to an extent, I'd like to get a bit more input. While I know certain players tend to have a problem with PvP, I'm fishing to see who would be interested in fighting IC. This could happen in a variety of places, sometimes having to set up fights in advance.
The easiest way to set it up is at Upper Jeuno: via Pursuivant at (H-7) for Abdhaljs Isle-Purgonorgo. If you've never done a Diorama either because of a lack of interest or because you were afraid to scrape your knee, they are basically ridiculously complicated PvP games that you can either take a college course on, or you can play by just running in and beating on each other with virtually no respawn time. The "Arena" is reserved for 2 hour slots, for a small sum of gil that currently escapes me. The 2 hour window is broken up into several matches, where two "Teams" will need to be set up.
Being the only current "Not exactly a good guy" in the shell, the team issue creates a few problems. Teams need to be relatively balanced, so there is always an opening for either "Dead Weight" players to take up slots and not do anything for a handicapped match, or "Mercenaries" that play the role of a hired thug or soldier. Obviously the "Mercenaries" are not IC, but can still RP as third henchmen from the left.
So who's interested, or at least open to fighting?
(Do my opinions count? I kinda snuck into the linkshell… I might not be considered a member yet.)
I suck at PvP, but there are times where an actual fight is better than one done in /emotes and using /rolls. Abdhaljs can be clunky for RP because sometimes it's not readily available and there is a little bit of downtime once one is actually -in- the zone, but it does help eliminate godmoding during in-character fights. Personally, I'd rather be slightly inconvenienced by waiting for Abdhaljs than having to grind my teeth and howl in frustration because I'm having an /emote fight with a level 10 Blackmage who claims to be using Chainspell, Invincible, and Astral Flow'ing with all of the avatars out at once (and, yes, that actually happened to me oh-so-many years ago on Asura).
… Not to say that /emote and /roll fights are all bad, mind you. I've had plenty that went just fine… I just start having issues with them when I feel like I'm getting godmoded at.
So.
I'm open to using Abdhaljs, when both participating parties agree to it. And I'm open with playing the part of a nameless henchmen or part of the scenery to even out sides.
"How hard did you hit him?" "Quite hard, actually. For some reason he irritated me." They stared back to where the Grolim lay. "You're getting to be more like Belgarath every day," Silk told him. "You do more damage out of simple irritation than most men can do in a towering rage."
Most people who know me know I dislike PvP, but if there is a good IC reason for two or more characters to have a fight I’m all for doing it ingame in Abdhaljs Isle-Purgonorgo. I do however caution that if it is done that it is discussed and planned thoroughly.
For obvious reasons character death is not really a possibility in this RP. I do however think that an actual PvP fight should be reserved for something special IC and that if a conflict of that magnitude occurs between two or more characters that it should have some lasting effect on the RP.
I’m in favor of making the option available but I believe that all options should be considered before taking the time to setup a PvP match IC. The simple fact that PvP can only happen in certain settings and not freely within the game world makes it inevitable that such events would have to be planned anyways.
Bumping this since I REALLY WANT TO KILL ALL OF YOU. C'MON, I PROMISE IT'LL BE FUN.
I'll try to advertise it a bit more, and lay down some basics for ground rules.
Since I have a feeling that people are worried about dying, I'll state outright that UNLESS YOU AGREE TO A DEATH MATCH, YOU WILL NOT DIE. Dying is NEVER taken lightly in RP, since most of the time we pretend that Raise isn't just an easy way to get all of the blood back into your body, or re-attach your head. If it's a Spar fight, you'll both probably walk away laughing. If it's a serious fight, both parties will still walk away in once piece, maybe just one a bit more bruised than the other. This probably should be talked about before the fight starts, so for example, if Kirious loses it'll make the difference between him congratulating you before vanishing, and swearing revenge as he limps off.
Second, there are a few types of fights.
One Round: We spawn, we fight, that's it. These are quick, but frankly I find them to end too quickly, especially considering how long it takes to build a match.
Respawn, Matches: Basically you fight repeatedly until the time limit for the round it up, after every "Scuffle" you both charge to full and buff, then go at it again.
Respawn, endless: Like the above, except that there is no break. After you drop, you rush back into the fray as fast as you can. This is my personal favorite style since instead of fully buffing yourself, you have to balance your buffs with what your opponent will be getting while you aren't pummeling him/her. It also prevents people from just using their strongest, highest MP spell constantly.
The latter two do have sort of a middle ground, where you cut each other some slack if their HP's in the red, these are just some examples.
We really should do an OOC round with a bunch of people out there, most people have a pretty good time out pummeling each other. Anyways, I'm still fishing for responses, I know some people are not comfortable with PvP, and I don't want to alienate anyone who isn't by trying to pull the into a match.
Planned sparring/training exercises could be a good reason to do this, at least for a non-conflict related one.
For the more serious incidents there should be a baseline set of rules, the most obvious being that being defeated doesn't equal a death. The game itself treats a defeat as a K.O., so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to consider it the same way IC'ly. Unless, of course, it's MEANT to be a deathmatch… which requires the agreement of both parties.
Individual matches can always be tailored to the participant's wishes/needs, to make things fair or more palatable. If someone doesn't want to see the "You have been defeated" message, it can be agreed that whoever's HP hits red first loses. Abilities could be limited, certain subjobs restricted, use of items/meds allowed, etc., to make things more even. I might be running on old info, but I'm fairly sure there's the ability to put a level cap on the fights.
As long as all parties involved are agreeable to PvP and the terms of the fight, I don't see a reason why it'd be an issue. If someone's not comfortable, that's fine, there's other methods.
Me, I'm fine with the idea of getting my butt kicked (or bravely running away) if it can turn into character/social development.
"How hard did you hit him?" "Quite hard, actually. For some reason he irritated me." They stared back to where the Grolim lay. "You're getting to be more like Belgarath every day," Silk told him. "You do more damage out of simple irritation than most men can do in a towering rage."
This sounds like fun, especially if we can have a decent reason to do so (to take some time off to relax, rewind and kick each other's asses IC works for me!).
Well, an IC Spar during our stay in Tavnazia makes a lot of sense. After we explore the "Open" areas, there wouldn't be a lot else to do anyways. Training sounds a lot better than sitting around for weeks on end.
