Preface

Since we've recently welcomed some individuals who are new to Final Fantasy XI to our circle, I'd like to provide some advice to help get you started. I jotted this down in a few minutes on my lunch break so there may be a number of errors or omissions. If you catch anything, please let me know!

Signet

Any time you're walking out of a major city (Windurst, Bastok, San d'Oria), you will see a guard near the gate with a name ending in WW, IM or TK. You should talk to these guys to recieve Signet. Signet provides you with some useful bonuses, and also allows you to represent your nation in Conquest. While you have signet, any kill you make that yields XP grants you conquest points that you can redeem for gear at one of your nation's signet guards.

Missions

You'll notice after inspecting what you can purchase with your conquest points that the higher level equipment requires higher rank. Near the signet guards at the gate should be a mission guard. Performing missions will lead to increases in rank (typically 3 missions per rank) and expose you to some of the storyline of your nation.

Fame

Doing quests in your nation will increase your renown amongst the people in that nation. Certain quests will not be available to individuals with insufficient amounts of fame. This is particularly noteworthy for White Mages and Ninja. White Mages will require fame in Windurst, Bastok, and San d'Oria to obtain teleportation spells, while Ninjas will require fame with Tenshodo to learn some of their techniques without paying through the nose for scrolls.

Outpost Warps

Each week, the results of Conquest are tallied and regions change hands between the nations. If your nation controls a region, you are eligible to deliver supplies to the outpost in that region. Once you have done this, you will be able to pay a nominal sum to be teleported to that region.

Telepoints

If you find yourself passing through La Theine Plateau, Tahrongi Canyon, or Konschtat Highlands, you should travel to the crag in that zone and find the Telepoint. Once you have examined it, you should obtain a key item that will allow White Mages to teleport you back to that crag.

There are also telepoints in Yhoator Jungle, Altepa Desert, and Xarcabard, but those places are somewhat dangerous and care should be taken when traveling.

Inventory and Mog House space

You might find your inventory and mog house space a bit small to store all of your items. There are a few things you can do to increase the inventory space available to you. There are Gobbie Bag quests in Jeuno that, with the requisite fame in Jeuno, will require a modest investment on the AH for some items the Goblins need to make your bag larger. Each upgrade grants you 5 additional inventory spaces. Haven't done many quests in Jeuno? Fear not. Jeuno fame is a composite of the other three nations, so if you are well known elsewhere, odds are you are well known in Jeuno.

Secondly, you can upgrade the size of your moghouse. You'll need the appropriate bed placed in your moghouse during a conquest update as well as the requisite level of fame in your home nation to be offered the quest. Each upgrade grants 10 additional slots to your mog's safe.

Lastly, there is an Artisan Moogle in the major cities who will make a mog sack for a nominal fee of 9980 gil. Any time you expand your bag with a Gobbie Bag quest, you can come back and see the Artisan Moogle and he will make your mog sack match the size of your Gobbie Bag. You can access the contents of your mog sack in the field via the menu (View House > Mog Sack) to store items in or retrieve items from your mog sack.

Some Important Milestones

Level 18: Congratulations, you can now obtain a quest to unlock access to a support job. While there are quests in both Mhaura and Selbina, most people tend to do the quest in Selbina as Wights are farmable in Gusgen 24/7 rather than the ghosts that only appear at night in Buburimu. If you reach 18 and would like some assistance with this quest, let me know and I'll come help you.

Level 20: You are now eligible to start work on your Chocobo license, which will be required to rent chocobos at the stables. You will need to work your way to Jeuno, preferably after farming the four pieces of Gausebitte Grass you will need for the quest. I reccomend farming these in Dangruf Wadi, as the rabbits there are much more accessible than the flies in Meriphataud.

Level 25: If you're seeking a group at this level you may find people asking you to come to Yuhtunga Jungle. To do this you will need to obtain an Airship Permit to Kazham. Obtain chest keys from Ghelsba, Palborough, and Giddeus and return them to the Air Travel Agency in Jeuno that departs for Kazham.

NPC Aggression

Different types of aggressive NPCs employ different means of detection, and therefore require different strategies to avoid an encounter in dangerous territory.

Most families of beastmen use sight to detect enemies. You may have noticed that if you walk behind a goblin, he won't attack you, but if you walk in front of him, he'll start trying to separate you from your kneecaps. Use invisibility to avoid sight detection.

Undead, bats, Quadav, and others use sound rather than sight to avoid detection. They don't have quite the distance that sight-aggressive monsters have, but it is omni-directional. Use sneak to avoid sound detection.

Elementals, bombs, evil weapons, dolls, pots, and other arcana tend to act aggressively towards spell casting. This is fairly long range and omnidirectional, and because of this you need to be mindful of when weather changes as elementals only come out when the appropriate weather is present. Avoid casting near these types of NPCs to avoid detection.

Undead are particularly dangerous because they aggro blood. When a wounded player (so that your hp has dipped into yellow, orange, or red) is near an undead, they will typically try to make an easy meal out of you. This is omnidirectional. Give the undead a wide berth while wounded.

Advanced Jobs

Upon reaching level 30, a number of quests will become available to you that will unlock new jobs. Most of these should be able to be unlocked without any outside help and just a few silent oils or prism powders to get around. Those that require you to fight notorious monsters (Ninja, Dragoon, Samurai) you will probably need to enlist some help for.

Very good starters guide, clear and simple^^
To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." – Doug Walker
