History

Childhood

Elysian has no memory of his parents. As a newborn baby Elysian was left at the doorstep of the Cathedral of Altanna in Northern San d’Oria. The priests and monks of the house of the goddess took the child in as an act of charity and raised it within the walls. The monks upon seeing the child felt a sort of inner peace, and gave it the name Elysian. As Elysian grew in age Elysian trained hard and studied hard from the monks. They taught all the basics of writing, reading, and praying to the goddess, as well as being taught hand-to-hand fight skills and white magic. Elysian took better to the magic skills than to the hand-to-skills. As such the monks abandoned teaching him martial arts after he broke his hand attempting to break a twig and landing solidly on the concrete block holding the piece of wood up.
At the age of 8, the cathedral made use of their young medic in training. They dispatched Elysian all over the nation. Running errands, healing wounds, curing poisons, and the like. Part of this was to grow the boy’s skill with white magic, but also to get him to explore and satisfy is child like curiosities. Of these duties, Elysian spent a great deal of time with Temple Knights, those charged with the safety and protection of the kingdom within its walls. He latched onto those noble knights, dreaming to be one. But he only saw it as a dream, for his first duty was to the cathedral and those that raised him.

Late Adolescence

“Father Arnau, why do I have to be the one to go to the land of the midgets?”
“Elysian my child, you are a strong and proud citizen of the Kingdom, but you mustn’t forget that the Tarutaru are still children of Altanna and deserve the same respect you would show to a fellow Elvaan or any of the races of Altanna.”
Elysian bowing his head in shame for forgetting his teachings, “Yes father.”
“As for your assignment, I feel you should go out and see more of the world the Great Goddess has bestowed upon us. That is why I had selected to you to bring this relic to the Federation.” Father Arnau explained as he handed a small gold encrusted box to Elysian.
“Yes Father, I will be mind full of your intentions for selecting me for this task.”
“A small detachment of Royal Knights is on its way to Selbina to deal with a few aggressive goblins that have been plaguing the adventurers out in those parts. They will be your escort to the cargo ship. A small group of Mithran Mercenaries will meet you in Mhaura and escort you to Windhurst.”
Putting on his hooded Royal Knights Cloak Elysian began to walk out of the main hall of the Cathedral.
“One last thing, my child. Your friends at the Temple Knights sent this over for you.” Arnau held out a long metal case. Elysian walked over to it and opened it to reveal a Divine Shield, polished to a high gloss, and beneath the shield was a long spiked club. Elysian held them up to the light and watched them glisten in the light.
“Now child that weapon may not be in accordance with church teachings of peace and harmony, this trip may not be the safest. Hopefully the sight of the weapon alone will be enough to deter your assailants. Should you be forced to use force, remember stunned your enemy will be more than sufficient, but leave that kind of business to your escorts as needed.”
With the reflection of light off the weapon in his eye, “Yes father, I understand.”
“Now off with you child, heed well the white magic you have learned. And let us not have any… self inflicted injuries with your new toy now.”
Blushing, “Yes father. May the Gates of the Goddess open for you.”

The journey to Selbina was routinely uneventful. The escort ran into a few wandering Orcs, but they were easily dispatched with the skilled swords of the Royal Knights and Elysian’s Curing spells. At the gate to Selbina, Elysian bid his escort farewell and blessed them a successful mission.
Elysian made strait to the docks. He paid for his ticket and sat at the water’s edge awaiting the vessel. Every so often double checking the pouch at the small of his back to make sure the item was still there.
The ship arrived…

The voyage was nothing like the journey to the port. A half hour into the trip the cargo ship was attacked by pirates. Elysian eager to use his new presents handed off his cargo to the captain for safe keeping and jumped into the fray attacking the skeletons attempting to loot the vessel. Valiantly the mage fought the undead heathens being summons from the enemy ship. But his efforts were in vain and the undead overwhelmed him. Seeing the coast of Mindartia, the pirates scooped up the unconscious Elvaan body and fled that sight of the cargo ship. Upon arrival at Mhaura the captain handed off the pouch Elysian was carrying to the Mithran mercenaries and told them of the fate of its owner.

As for Elysian, he awoke, alone in a small room. His hands were bound with rope, and his weapons gone.
“Finally awake be ye.” A harsh voice call from a dark corner.
“What do you want me pirate scum?”
“A mouth on ye for a cleric.”
“I may look like a priest but I am not one. Those men only raised me.”
“Ah, be ye an orphan then. Normally those type be praying to the goddess for protection at this point.”
“I am not afraid of you. Now tell me what do you want!”
“Quite a lot of spirit. That item you were carrying was worth quite a bit o’gil.”
“Sorry I do not have it any longer.”
“Aye I know.”
Elysian looked puzzled. He had never seen this man before nor heard his voice how could he have known what transpired on the ship.”
“Our Ninja’s were able to follow those Mithras in Mhaura and were able to guess what happened. Lucky be you that item was not worth the price of wrangling with those frisky cats. But unlucky to you be me out of me booty.”
Elysian cringed at the predicament that was he in.
“The San d’Orian army will come for me just you wait!”
“Really now mate? One lone man, out on the open seas. Not even any longer in the possession of the item they sent you with. Not even a fleet of ships to search said sea.” The voice crackled a hardy laugh.
“Here be your only choice lad. Death or life. You want to live, you be a member of me crew. If you value your life so little then the sea be more than willing to accommodate ye.”
The voice was absolutely correct. Elysian knew the kingdom would never attempt to save one man. Let alone one out in the ocean where they are unable to access. Elysian was young and full of energy, he did not want to cut his life short, even if what the priest said were true, that gates of the goddess seem more like fantasy to him.
“Life” He muttered.
The voice laughed “Welcome boy to me crew.”

Elysian 22
Elysian quickly learned that the pirate life was everyone out for themselves. The ship, the crew, the food, the plunder, was all a first come first serve basis. Luckily the captain, Nitz as Elysian came to know his name, was looking out for the new recruit. Slipping him food and drink behind the backs of the crew. Elysian worked the lowly jobs of the ship cleaning, painting. In battle he was used for his skills as a white mage, keeping the pirates healed and well protected on their assaults. After years of daily pirate life, Elysian turned to his captain friend, and asked him why his life was spared that fateful day.
The captain laughed with his usual forceful laugh. “Boy, in all me years of attacking those pirate ships. Never have I seen a lowly white mage put up such a fight against us. Usually those adventure types hide below deck. I thought ye had spunk and took pity on ye. Though it seemed to have been a most profitable venture. Ye be ready for me master plan.”
“Master Plan captain?”
“Aye. See me boy I be getting old and Gilgamesh needs a man he can trust. Ye be that man.”
Elysian felt a welling up of pride and a smile ran across his face.
“Don’t be counting your chocobo’s before the hatch boy. Ye aint quite ready. See boy as skilled as ye be at the arts of healin, they aint quite the skills needed to be leaded a group o pirates. Next week boy I be sending ye to the Arrapago Islands out by the empire of Aht Urhgan. Seek out the corsairs held up in those caves boy. They owe me a few favors, speak my name and your intent boy and they be teachin ye the ways of a pirate.”
“I am honored captain. Thank you!”
“Coming back alive will be thanks enough boy!” The captain let out a roaring laugh.

5 years later…

Elysian stands tall at the helm of his own vessel. Continuing the duties of his former captain, but with his own style, and a much better hat.
