Here's a showcase of the main characters in the Far East fanfiction that I'm writing, with a spoiler-less description for each of them.

THE PARTY:

Kenjii (NIN): After leaving Avina's group, Kenjii headed to Norg to sail for the Far East. But when the ship he travels on is attacked by a mysterious force, he is forced to escape on an emergency boat with Shion and a strange box the boy carries. After finally finding the medic he was looking for, Kenjii is forced to stop using Great Katanas and so decides to restart studying Ninjutsu in order to be able to fight.
The separation from Avina has influenced him greatly, and his behavior returned to how he originally was before knowing her. In the Far East, he is somewhat corrupted and terribly cruel. He distrusts everyone and everything, preferring to not make any friend. As if this wasn't enough, he doesn't miss a chance to hurt people with either his harsh words or a good punch across the face. The Far Eastern people will quickly see him as a dangerous and often mean individual. Insolent, arrogant and egocentric, yet at the same time a charismatic boy with cold judgment skills. His favorite quotes in this period are "Go get killed" "I'm going to kill you" and a lot of variations around this topic.

Shion (MNK): A 15 years old lively elvaan kid from Aht Urghan. He traveled to Elshimo looking for his lost sister, but after several months of unsuccessful searching he decided to try reach the middle lands. Unaware it was heading to the hated Far East, he went on the ship Kenjii was on, as a clandestine. His weapon is a pole, but he doesn't mind using punches and kicks at the first chance. Since in his brain there seem to be no room for any concept other than eating and having fun, he doesn't have the time nor the chance to seriously think about what happens around him. Sorta stubborn, naive and somewhat slow, he is also very cheerful and doesn't like to be left out. Because of his easy behavior, he is the group's 'mascot', and he spends his days playing with Kage, making Kenjii mad and growing under Hikari's careful attentions. He has red hair and golden eyes.

Kage (SAM): 20 years old elvaan guy, originary from the Far East. He joins Kenjii and Shion under request of the chieftain of the village he lives in, after fighting them to save Hikari. He doesn't like to talk about his origins nor his family, and doesn't seem to have a personal goal. He prefers to live daily, making a living with gambling and other easy jobs that don't require too much thinking.
On a first approach, maybe because of his language somewhat rude and his superficial behavior, he may look like a spineless good at nothing. Yet in many occasions he's able to prove himself as someone to rely on, always caring about his friends. He's a "playfellow" for Shion, a close friend of Hikari and a bicker-pal to Kenjii (lol). A ladies man, he prefers action over strategy. His weapon is an eastern spear. He has the black hair and eyes typical of the East. This character is a tribute to Xael.

Hikari (WHM): 22 year old white mage who lives in the Far East. He used to be a teacher for the children of his village, before his whole family was wiped for a sacrifice to restore Phoenix's power. Since then, his magic seems to have lost potency and he lost all his self confidence. He tries though to hide his depression under a constant smile that some may find irritating and hypocrite. Even though it may not look like it, he's very agile and his jokes are the party's torment. You can't really tell if he's naive or just pretending to be. He travels with a red chocobo that never leaves him alone, RedCrystal. He got blond hair and deep green eyes. This character is a memento to how I used to RP Kjara in my former group.

THE DUO FROM THE WESTERN CONTINENT:
At some point in their adventure, Kenjii and his group run into a strange couple coming from the continent far to the West of the Middle Lands.

Dhemetra (DNC): a 24 years old girl, coming from the West to the Far East with a mysterious goal. Rather strict and somewhat cynical in her critics, she seems very interested in Kenjii and what he does. Behind her gracious and elegant dances she hides an aggressive combat spirit and a great pride.

John (RNG): A silent galka ranger dressing native clothes. He accompanies Dhemetra and works as her bodyguard, killing any foe attempting to her life with his huge culverin gun. He doesn't seem to have any other goal but protect Dhemetra.

THE VILLAINS:

Ame (SMN): Son of the leader of the rebels. He fights in order to restore the glory of the Far East Nations. Even though he is the first to debate whether the sacrifices to Phoenix may be worth it or not, he is very proud and firm on his decision to support his father, and will not stop until his purpose is fulfilled. Even though he may look cold and emotionless, he hides a kind heart and a very caring nature for his close ones. His ambition is to be the chosen summoner to control the Phoenix.

Sayu Meloh (DRG): A kind mithra with the skills of a spearman. She supports Ame with both her fighting abilities and her knowledge in the arts of making medicines. She is shy and tends to lose confidence easily, but is very loyal to her lord and will always gain strength from his words of encouragement.

Masaki (WAR): A warrior who betrayed his clan to join Ame's faction. He has an old rivalry relationship with Kage, and never fails to challenge him every time the two groups walk into each other. Easygoing and cheerful, he does everything he can to support Ame, and watches over him like a big brother.

Lamia (MNK): Ame's sister. Lamia is not her true name, but she likes to be called like this since when she managed to slay one of the nasty Aht Urghanian foes. She is so proud of her victory that decided to make an headgear with the lamian spoils as a trophy, that she never forgets to wear. She treats the fight against Aht Urghan, and the internal conflict to revive Phoenix, as a child's play. While this often puts her in trouble, she is lucky enough to always get out of any nasty situation, even though most of the times it's Ame that has to rescue her.

To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." – Doug Walker
